1940 Ford coupe spare tire brace

Does anyone know if the spare tire brace is a structural support, I’d like to completely remove the metal brace. Don’t worry, not a stock car. Thanks.

no thermostat housing, hose plumbs right into head. If there's a thermostat I can't find it.
