looks like the head gasket has problem at the rear water passage, the black areas usually are suspect places for leaks on that type of gasket
where is the suspected crack? ---is it the lower stud?...

The one with the journals not worn, I went through some cams and found 1/2 of them had undersized journals, , as much as .010 difference between the center and end journals

35-36 had covers crimped on, perhaps they are that era replacement--- that crimp has to be cut off then the cover is removed , under it is a removable cover over the innards

those oil grooves curving around the front thrust surface are factory, they are cast in when the bearing was poured, I have both finished and unfinished NOS caps showing that detail
