Re: Darn thing won't start...
There's a reason I love this forum..... you guys rock!
So, I didn't drain the gas or mess with the carb - FWIW I only use non-ethanol fuel because I know it may sit for periods of time, and we all...

Re: Darn thing won't start...
Not as of yet, but one would think it would at least pop and fart a little bit here and there even if the points/plugs were dirty.
Visually, they looked OK.
But thanks for the input.

Darn thing won't start...
Hey all, need a hand with some troubleshooting.
'31 SW TS with stock engine setup.
It's been some time since I tried to start the A (a couple of years), and I'm having a hell of a time. Feel...

Re: Uhaul Auto Transport & Tudor
Worked fantastic to bring our S/W home.
However, we did learn a few things. Not the least of which was that the Ma and Pa U-Haul outfits aren't generally subject to the same equipment audits as...

Re: Model A Drive to Custer, WA
Would've loved to come along, but work has been a 70-80 hour a week affair lately. I'm afraid the A is under cover for the year at this point. I'll just have to settle for driving vicariously through...

Re: Model A Drive to Custer, WA
Nice video Art! At the top of Vista Dr. (4-way stop at the school), if you had looked out over the field you would've had a pretty good chance of seeing my '31 SW sitting under my carport! And yeah,...

Re: Need some expertise...main bearings
Kid-
Thanks for the tip - I may go ahead and give the "shave" concept a whirl and see what happens.
Does anyone have any thoughts on these bearing clearances being the cause of my deep thump at...

Re: Need some expertise...main bearings
Thanks guys for the thoughts on this.
Kurt - the darker "spot" is actually a low point, kind of a divit that you can feel very easily by hand. Nothing "wiggles", all seems to be pretty tight. I...

Need some expertise...main bearings
Hey all-
Dropped the pan today to check the main bearing clearances, in hopes of quieting the deep thump that presents at higher RPMs.
Started with the center, which was a little out, and...

Well, I was pretty excited about it.....
Our local Shell refinery held their second annual open class car show this past weekend. Participants included employees, friends, family, as well as a couple of local car clubs. Total turn-out was...

Re: Engine smoking...and I don't know why
OK - finally a bit of additional info:
Ran downtown today to grab a burger and pick-up a few things at the store, and she didn't seem to exhibit the smoking that I had observed before. Perhaps it...

Re: Engine smoking...and I don't know why
Hey all-
Wanted to chime in and thank everyone for their thoughts and suggestions.
I've been out of town for work, so I haven't had the opportunity to perform a compression test or a leak-down...

Re: Aries muffler question
Interesting... Nice to know that I'm not alone in my issues with the fit-up to the manifold.
New (black) Aries didn't fit up well to the original manifold, which was replaced about two weeks...

Steel or cast iron???
Can anyone tell me by looking at these pics if the drums are original steel or newer cast iron?
The whole package looks like a pretty fair deal, especially if the drums are cast iron.
Also, '30...

Re: Engine smoking...and I don't know why
Art - Just running the engine here at the house - didn't go anywhere.
I'll get a compression test done (won't be til next weekend), and update with that information.

Re: Engine smoking...and I don't know why
- No air filter
- Plugs look reasonable - nothing way out of the ordinary - and they all look essentially the same.
- No obvious restriction in the oil fill tube
- New manifold did have some...

Re: Engine smoking...and I don't know why
Further info:
Aries exhaust is a couple weeks old - so it's well "burned in". Only did the manifold with gasket today, as it was discovered to be toast when the Aries was installed.

Re: Engine smoking...and I don't know why
Have not run any MMO as of yet. I've only had the rig for just under a month, and only filled the tank once during that time (non-ethanol btw).
Was seriously considering running some MMO or...

Re: Engine smoking...and I don't know why
I had that thought as well, but I have run the engine for some time and would have a hard time believing that this is still the "newness" burning off the exhaust system.
A little at first I could...

Re: Engine smoking...and I don't know why
Don't have a compression tester, so that will take a little time to procure and perform.
However, I agree that it would be prudent.
And oil level is fine - not overfilled. Just triple checked...

Re: Engine smoking...and I don't know why
GAV fully closed and she roughs up a bit.
As I open up the GAV, she smooths out at about 1/4-1/2 turn, but I can keep opening it up w/o having any impact on how the engine is running. 5 turns...

Re: Engine smoking...and I don't know why
Well, it's not black - so we can rule that out
Not losing any water level, and it doesn't appear white (seen that before on a different car) - so I'm pretty sure we're not talking about coolant.

Engine smoking...and I don't know why
Hey all-
Need a little help on this one. '31 SW, stock engine. Did a few things to the engine today (exhaust manifold w/gasket, cap/rotor) and double checked the timing. She starts right up and...
