One way to test is with an Ohm meter. The reading between the screw and the the body of the sender unit is in the area of 12-14 ohms. Readings in this range usually indicate a good sender unit.

Over 15 yeas ago I removed 2 of the purple globes that Dan In MI described and painted the bulbs with blue/green finger nail polish. I used the identical process that Joe 1950 described

51504 bat‘s reply is the best option. Use a battery tender for idle periods longer than 2/3 months. Also you could always remove the fuse temporarily.

I used the license plate light from 1950-53 MGTD. Part # 144-200 from Moss Motors. $19.95. Pictures attached from my 49 convertible.
