Sealed beams

I am not ready to tackle headlights yet, but I have been following the discussions about original vs halogen vs LEDs. Why are sealed beams not included in the discussions ?

Re: Hood fit with 29 cross member

That part of the project was a couple years ago, and I don't recall that hole alignment was an issue. The rivets had been replace with nuts and bolts, and I replaced those with grade 8 of the proper...

Hood fit with 29 cross member

My huckster-to-be was originally a 1930 coupe with all original (I believe) front end sheet metal when I bought it, and the hood fit well. In the course of total disassembly I discovered that the...

Re: Flow testing a carb

Thanks for all the feedback. With all the posts recommending flow-tested carbs or jets, I didn't want to foolishly ignore something critical. As a big advocate of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" I...

Re: Flow testing a carb

Makes perfect sense. Dog only upsets water, not gasoline.

Re: OT: What type wood between frame rails and truck box?

We moved to a 'new' home in 1958 which was surrounded by big black locust trees. Legend has it that locusts were planted to act as natural lightning rods. In our area locust was the fence post of...

Flow testing a carb

My car came with a Tillotson, and it ran fine. A friend gave me a Zenith 2 that had sat on a shelf for at least 20 yrs, so I rebuilt it with a kit, including new jets, and it seems to run fine. Many...

Re: LED headlight bulbs

There was a test of headlight bulbs in the Restorer two or three issues ago. I don't recall the result, but it was thorough and unbiased assessment of several options.

Quiet muffler

The muffler in my huckster-to-be has several holes that have rusted through. When running, the car doesn't sound loud, but I know it won't pass inspection when the time comes. I know many of you out...

Re: Rear axle and diff

I have read about setting the preload, but have never done it--or thought I needed to. Note--I didn't change the housing, only the axle shaft. I also seem to recall that the spider gears had to be...

Rear axle and diff

When I first bought my car a couple years ago, I tore it all apart and discovered the damage on the left rear axle shaft. Following instructions in the red book, I removed the left housing, installed...

Re: Zenith internal passages

That is another part that was missing from my carb. I think I have all parts now.

Re: Zenith internal passages

Update-- I finished rebuilding the Zenith according to the red book and Tom Endy's article. Attached the gas line, and she started right up. Two quick questions--the carb came with no GAV needle or...

Re: Putting model a on lift

Per post #2, I can't imagine attaching battery cables or anything else to the bottom flange of the frame on any vehicle. The liklihood of jacking at any given point during the life of the car is...

Re: Zenith internal passages

UNCLE! I give up. I haven't read Tom's article yet, but I promise not to drill out any plugs

Zenith internal passages

In scanning the catalogs for parts not included in the rebuild kit I saw the pkg of brass plugs for use after cleaning the internal passages. The red book says to clean them out if badly plugged,...

Re: Carb rebuild

Update--pleased to report success. Heat and cold water worked to release the main jet. Pretty soon my carb will look those on Gary's shelf

Re: Carb rebuild

Just discovered the shoulder at the base of the venturi. Was able to use a screwdriver and teased it out of the upper body. The secondary well came out OK. Had to use determination and be certain...

Carb rebuild

I have a Zenith 2, a rebuild kit, and the red book open on the bench. Two problems so far. The venturi is stuck very firmly into the top body. I have tried tapping the top of it, but there is too...

Re: Gas shut-off leaks-I think

Great photo. Per Joop's suggestion I discovered that the valve does, in fact, leak. I think I will use your suggestion, and I already have a flaring tool.

Gas shut-off leaks-I think

My shutoff valve looks like all the ones in the catalogs, so I assume it is a late model replacement for the original. I shut it off faithfully after each trip (in and out of the garage) but the carb...

I had the same problem at first. You need to reduce your photo size.

Re: Robertson screws

Interesting observation. I thought I was experiencing a manufacturing glitch when I discovered none of the hardware stores in my area carry #12 screws. I don't need Robertson, but blade or phillips...
