Re: speedo gear-in tranny

Or get something like this:

https://www.texasindustrialelectric.com/speedo.asp

Or you can use a speedo app on your smart phone.

Re: What Model is This 56

Unless Mainline sales were so dismal they wound up with "extra" trim. Sales forecasting is somewhat of an arcane science and I'm sure wasn't any easier back in the day.

Re: What Model is This 56

Ford may have been using up the Customline stainless since the upcoming '57s were a completely different body and the '56 trim wouldn't fit. Just a guess. This was well before "just in time"...

Re: California pcv ??

Does Cali require pre-emission vehicles to have emission controls added? I haven't heard that but I wouldn't put it past 'em.

Re: California pcv ??

I doubt that's factory. Factory PCV systems didn't appear until the late '50s/early 60s. The leaking, folded over road draft tube tells the tale. A factory system would be air tight except at the...

Re: What Model is This 56

OK, I'm saying "uncle". I wasn't aware of the mid-year change.

Re: What Model is This 56

I'm not convinced. It has all the Customline side trim. It looks like someone added the stainless piece below the white paint that leads to the tail light. They did an excellent job of it, too.

You're correct, it's a Customline. My bad...:o

That's a '56 Mainline.

Re: 55 mercury steering box

That's going to be tough. Lares catalogs the box but is "out of stock until further notice". Other than contacting classic car salvage yards, I'm out of ideas. The box may be the same as a '55 Ford...

Re: 55 mercury steering box

Do you need the complete box (yours is missing?) or does your box need to be rebuilt? If you need a rebuild here is one place that can do it.

Re: re build or buy

Motor City Flathead was involved in a project to cast new blocks with some improvements. They did produce one prototype aluminum block and put it in a '34 coupe which showed up at Honest Charlie's...

Re: re build or buy

Back in the day if your flattie wasn't cracked you had won the lottery. Seems the late blocks were more prone to it than the 59A and earlier. I had one fixed about 30 years ago, same issue; a crack...

Re: Checking radiator for overheating problem with 1956 Thunderbird

Amazon has a pretty good selection of round tuit goods.

Re: Checking radiator for overheating problem with 1956 Thunderbird

Snake oil may reduce or seal your transmission leak temporarily but eventually it will start leaking again, and maybe worse than it is now. It works by swelling the seal which also softens it while...

Re: 1957 Ford Country Sedan Transmission Question

If it's the original transmission it's a Fordomatic which does start in 2nd if you have the gear selector in the D position. No need to start out in low unless you just want to, although with 2.79...

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere

The ball joints I could deal with, but I think I'd be looking at installing an AOD and a modern ignition and carb to improve gas mileage. We're talking about a car that got maybe 10 to 12 mpg on a...

Re: 55 crown power window motor

Yup, they have 'em. In fact they're the only outfit I found that service the quarter windows for our hardtops and convertibles. The hardest part of the installation was getting the quarter windows...

Re: 55 crown power window motor

I went with the Nu-Relics system for my car, but it has been converted to 12v. I did quite a bit of research before buying. Nu-Relics beats the others hands down IMO. I'm not aware of any aftermarket...

Re: 55 crown power window motor

I have the 6v motors, relays and the window regulators out of my '55 Merc I'll sell. PM me if interested. Yeah, keep your fingers and other appendages out of the way when raising the windows, they're...

Re: Zinc anode for radiator

Standard bought out most of their competition some time ago. Sorenson, Borg Warner, Echlin. Their Four Seasons A/C division bought out Everco and Murray, too. I think they now have the lion's share...

Re: Zinc anode for radiator

Ships do have anodes on their hulls. The anodes are usually replaced about every 3 years or so when the ship goes to dry dock for routine inspection/maintenance. The props are made of bronze alloy...

Re: rocker arm oiling problems on Y block

My 292 runs at about 40 PSI warm regardless of RPM. It starts cold at 50 PSI and drops to 40 as it warms up. I use a mechanical gauge.

Re: rocker arm oiling problems on Y block

The toilet paper filter was actually pretty good at its job, it would filter out finer particles than a regular filter and much cheaper. It was a common JC Whitney item back in the day.
