Re: 1957 Ford Wiper Transmission Cable routing

Fairlane500:

I may have some incorrect information in my above explanation. I did this installation over a year ago and the exact assembly sequence does escape me, but I found a post on another...

Re: 1957 Ford Wiper Transmission Cable routing

Unfortunately, a new electric drive motor will not cure the problems of the cable drive transmission that drives the two wiper blade shafts. The electric drive motor is a very nice upgrade to the...

Re: Affordable pcv addon?

Chad,

The easiest way to install the PCV would be to obtain a T-Bird valley pan with the hole for the PCV and baffle already in place, but those are hard to find. I did see one on Ebay but he...

Re: What color were OEM engine blocks in 1957?

The Ford engine color for 1957 was indeed a red/orange color (the official name was Ford engine red). The color of the Ford and Chevy engines for 1957 (probably from about 1954 thru 57, but I'm not...

Re: Fordomatic late shifting ('57 thunderbird)

Kent,

I am using Type F transmission fluid in my 1957 Skyliner with 312 and Fordomatic. Prior to owning this car, I had a 1957 Fairlane 500 with 292 and Fordomatic. I had that car for 17 years...

Re: Fordomatic late shifting ('57 thunderbird)

Hello Kent,

I have a 1957 Skyliner with the Fordomatic transmission. Last spring I pulled the transmission to install a "front seal kit" (front trans. pump seals, large converter o'ring). When I...

Re: I notice my transmission leaking a little bit on the floor.

The torque converters in the Fordomatic transmissions (either air cooled or water cooled versions) are a bolted assembly rather than a welded assembly like most later converters. The large o'ring...

Re: 56 t/bird auto

I recently bought parts from AutoTran (located in Massachusetts) for my 1957 Skyliner (front seal kit is what I purchased). The parts came fairly quickly and the prices seemed reasonable. They also...

Re: Back-up Lights 1957 Ford

Gene,

I'm glad to hear that you got your backup lights working. I also have a 57 Skyliner that I bought a couple of years ago. One of the things I had to work on was the backup lights that...

Re: rear main seal replacement

Removal of the upper half of the rope seal is nearly an impossible task with the crankshaft in place. It can be done, but as you know from experience it is very difficult. One trick that I did on a...

Re: 1957 Ford park will not hold

The parking linkage should be accessible through the bottom pan to view to see what the problem is. As mentioned above, it is most likely a damaged park pawl that engages the external teeth on the...

Re: fuses 56 ford customline

The back-up lights are powered by the neutral start switch (located at the base of the steering column on the engine side of the firewall). The switch could possibly be out of position (it can be...

Re: Just had my automatic transmission

My 1957 Fairlane (292 engine) will downshift at speeds up to around 62-65, but requires a real stomp on the pedal at anything over around 60 MPH. The attached table is from a 1957 Fordomatic manual...

Re: light switch wiring 56 merc

I think the "D" terminal is for the dome lamp. The attached schematic of the light switch (for my 57 Ford, but should be the same for the Merc) shows the "B" terminal (which is the connection to the...

Re: points coil 272 y

The wiring to the coil and distributor can be a bit confusing. The red wire from the harness feed will need to attach to one end of the ballast resistor. The wire from the other end of the ballast...

Re: points coil 272 y

It's possible that the black wire with your ignition harness was the feed from the cranking circuit. The best way to tell would be to check the voltage on that wire when you have someone hold the key...

Re: points coil 272 y

The original ignition circuit had a ballast resistor (no longer needed with Pertronix system & Pertronix coil). If you go back to points, you will need a ballast resistor in the ignition circuit. ...

Re: Installing PCV on 312

The air flow through the engine is somewhat "centered" with the outlet in the rear of the valley pan cover, and if the outlet was in just one of the valve covers it wouldn't be quite as effective.

I'm sure the information that you receive by email will cover all of this as well, but I thought I would post the procedure I used to install the PCV valve on my 57 Ford 292:

1) Remove intake...

Re: '57 Fairlane 292 CID Oil Dipstick Missing Stop

C&G Ford Parts lists an engine oil dipstick for the y-block (Price is $19.95). You could possibly braze some type of stop on your current dipstick, but it would probably not look quite like the...

Re: Gas smell when driving

One thing to take a look at is the fuel tank sending unit. My 57 Fairlane 500 was having similar issues, particularly when the tank was just filled. I found that the sending unit gasket (which was...

Re: Air Conditioning in your Ford...what did you do?

I used a Vintage Air under dash unit that has heat/cool/defrost. I completely removed the factory heater core and housing so the Vintage Air "Slimline" unit would fit in better under the dash. The...
