Re: rotor cap

I agree.

.036 should not be a problem at all. Will give you a hotter spark.

We would make a spark intensifier by making an adaptor with a built-in gap if we had an issue with an old engine...

Re: Engine pans

They not only make the engine compartment look finished, but they also perform a function.

They help keep a lot of road debris out of the engine compartment especially if you are driving on a lot...

Re: Engine pans

The engine pans go on the underside of the bottom frame flange and on the underside of the engine pan rail. The pan bolts attach the engine pans to the engine.

Re: Front fender crack

Do not have it brazed, have it welded!!!

A repair that was brazed makes it MUCH more difficult to do anything with should it need additional repair in the future.

Re: Tudor seat pivot pin

I use a clevis pin with a "hair pin" cotter pin to keep it in place. It is very easy to pull the hair pin and remove the clevis pin and slide the seats back onto the rear floor. This is especially...

Re: What is the best rust remover soak?

I have used Rust 911 for many years with very good results. It comes in concentrated form and is biodegradable. Much cheaper than Evaporust. I buy it online direct from the manufacturer.

Re: ?When to Pull the Tank?

I definitely would clean the tank, and this is a good time to do it.

I have used Rust 911 with very good results. No need to remove the tank and it will not attack paint. I would try to keep it...

Re: Balance a Burtz

Having built 18 Burtz engines so far, I have found in most cases, the "factory" balance is satisfactory. Most of the engines were good but some were a little better and some were not quite as smooth...

Re: Greasing the Throwout Bearing

Henry designed the clutch thrust bearing (throw out bearing) and the clutch thrust bearing hub (the part the bearing mounts on) so both can be lubricated. Putting grease thru the grease fitting on...

Re: Model B distributor on Model A

The Model B distributor curve is better than most currently available aftermarket mechanical advance distributors. You can add a timing advance scale and mark the crank with a TDC timing mark and use...

Re: changing batery location

I use Optima Batteries. I install them under the floorboards and forget about them for the next 10 years or more.

Personally, I would not have a battery hung on the firewall, but this is just my...

Re: Head studs

Do not use original studs.

Use Grade 8 or chrome-moly.

I would torque the head to 55-60 #lbs.

I would use the "Best" Kevlar reinforced graphite gasket.

I would use spray copper coat on...

Re: My First A - 1931 S/W Fordor

WOW!!!

What a great car.

You do not see unrestored Model A's in this condition very often.

I would get it running, clean it up, put some blankets over the seats to protect them and enjoy it...

Re: Front Crankshaft seal

One thing you have to do no matter which seal you use is to be sure the surface on the pulley where the seal rides is absolutely round and smooth. I polish this surface on the new pullies I use when...

Re: Rebuilt Engine Piston Resistance

When you first start it, do NOT just let it just idle. Run it at about 1000-1500 RPM, varying the engine speed every so often. You need to get the engine speed up to ensure the internal components...

Re: Oily substance in intake manifold

Could also be a little oil passing thru the valve guides. I would not worry about it if your plugs all look good.

My opinion,

Re: Rebuilt Engine Piston Resistance

Sounds good to me.

I would use regular motor oil to lubricate the cylinders, WD-40 is not a very good lubricant. On a freshly rebuilt engine that has not yet run, it will always be harder to turn...

Re: What is normal charging behavior?

A lot of currently available ammeters are of poor quality, probably made in China.

One problem I have often run across is that the nuts at the base of the studs on the back of the ammeter are not...

Re: knock during hard acceleration

I agree,

What you hear is detonation. DO NOT LET YOUR ENGINE DETONATE.
This can destroy an engine in a very short period of time.

A 5.5 Snyder head should not run more than about 26-28 deg....

Re: Model A/B Test Stand

It sure makes changing engines a lot easier.

I built this stand out of stuff I had around the shop. I did have to buy the casters and sheet metal for the gas tank. It started out as a quick and...

Re: Engine rust

I agree and have used this process on several cars with very good success. Just flushing will not get rid of all the rust. Unless you get rid of the rust the problem will still be there.

Re: Cracked 'B' head.

I would not recommend this procedure.

I would torque in the normal pattern but initially snug each stud and then tighten to 35 ft-lbs and increase 5 ft-lb increments up to 55 ft-lbs.

This is...
