Re: Engine overhaul issues...

He just happened to be in the area (over an hour away though) and offered to stop by. Very relieved to not have to pull an engine a 3rd time in 2 years. All I want is an engine that will last 40k...

Engine overhaul issues...

Some of you may remember my thread from a few weeks ago on my $3,800 engine "overhaul". For what it's worth, I called the builder about 6:30 this evening to tell him about the issue. Not only did...

Re: 3rd engine failure...getting frustrated

Appreciate everyone's input very much. I may try to haul the car to the builder and see what he comes up with... unfortunately that is a 6 hour round trip drive pulling a trailer. I will keep...

Re: 3rd engine failure...getting frustrated

I generally shift 2nd to 3rd at probably half the RPM I'm at when driving 45mph. Similar 1st to 2nd.

3rd engine failure...getting frustrated

I've had my '30 Tudor about 4 years. The first engine a valve seat came loose and destroyed a piston. The 2nd engine I bought used, locally for $1,000, and believe it was a junk engine, it was...

Re: Easy fix for carburetor fuel line leak

My mistake, I put a magnet on it and the line is steel, not aluminum.

Easy fix for carburetor fuel line leak

Woke up this morning to a house that smelled like gas because I forgot to turn off the fuel valve on the "A". Decided to try to fix it right, it has been an ongoing issue for months, and didn't go...

Theft of original license plates - is this an issue?

I have 1930 TX plates on my Tudor. It is my weekend car, so it is often at the grocery store, hardware store, or wherever else I need to go. I only have the rear plate installed as I've wondered if...

Re: Black spark plug ooze

On my just-overhauled engine I had a plug leaking like this. I added anti-seize to the plug threads and I believe that has stopped the leaking. Now I'm wondering if I have a ring issue...guess I...

Re: Steering wheel turns light switch rod

Thanks for posting this. I've had this problem for a while, but it recently/randomly got much worse. I added the bushing from Brattons, cleaned/oiled & straightened the light switch rod and it...

Re: Model A's & Airplanes

I traded an airplane for my '30 Tudor. The plane was a "Pietenpol Air Camper", designed by a farmer in Minnesota in the 20s, and originally outfitted with a Ford Model A engine. Many people still...

Re: Can I use new cast brake drums with old shoes?

Agree with all of the thoughts above... i'd rather do it once and do it right. With that in mind, I have the drums, what else do I need to buy? How many hours to do the work for a first timer? I...

I have a '30 Tudor with an oval speedometer, can I easily re-set the odometer to 0 miles? I want to do this simply because the number on the odometer number is meaningless after 90 years....I was...

What is a "reasonable" speed in a Model A for one to get "reasonable" engine life?

Just installed a new stock/rebuilt engine in my A from a reputable builder. I asked him if it was OK to drive it 45 to 50 mph, or if that would hurt engine life. He suggested that it would likely...

Re: New engine - intermittent backfiring - stuck valve?

Y'all fixed it! Carb float level was off by 1/4" or more. Set it to 1" from the gasket surface and she runs nice and strong now, which is good for a new $4,000 engine. :) Thank you all for the...

According to this chart, either my float is set too low or the main orifice has trash in it:

Re: New engine - intermittent backfiring - stuck valve?

A little more information on this...

I haven't contacted the builder until I know for sure it is a valve...don't want to waste his time if it isn't his issue, and now I don't think it is.

Can I use new cast brake drums with old shoes?

The car came with new cast drums when I got it and I need to install them. Will it hurt to keep the shoes?

New engine - intermittent backfiring - stuck valve?

I have a new engine with maybe 80 miles on it, built by a reputable manufacturer. It has started intermittent backfiring "fits" and corresponding power loss after it gets warm. I don't think it is...

I had a piston come apart in my "A". No idea on the history of the engine or the piston source as I've only had it a couple of years. The pistons look very new, at least the parts in the bottom of...
