They just snap over a lip around the top of the sending unit. Pry it off with a flat screw driver or bottle opener.

The filters I have seen like that have had the assembly number stamped on the bottom, like 78-9600-A.

Welcome aboard. My 1937 flathead has two block drain plugs, one on either side at the front of the engine below where the block mounted water pumps are.

I have no experience with the Irontite...

You can order a drawing of the part from the Benson Ford Research Center for $30/part number if you can't find the details of the modification anywhere else. There is an order form on their website.
