Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Ya mean where the guys are 'building' a street rod and three pallets of boxes arrive with the mustang 2 front clip and all the other bolt on goodies?

I got one head all dialed in and I'm happy...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Pete, I'll pencil you in for time and a half as yer working overtime on this thread, and Ray you know what a climb it is just to reach my place, no wonder I need a tight squish. I have always...

Re: One Head stud too short each bank follow-up

Those 'mill spec' washers in 1/2" would be just right on main bearing caps.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Wow guys. That's a vote of confidence if there ever was one. My epoxy is cured but alas, I have some house fixit projects I promisecd I'd help my wife with this morning. (But she does go to work at...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I have a couple well worn .030 blocks and pistons. I found that with 60 grit adhesive sandpaper on a .030 piston, the contour is exactly the same as my .125's crown. I have a ton of rods so I cut one...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Swap meet was a great outing, but too short. Working between first ferry off the rock and last one back, then the driving... Got a used set of 8rt pumps for ten bucks that feel tight and an oil bath...

Re: Rebuilt flathead tight - too tight?

I just went down to the shop to test the one I am putting together. I'm not an expert, but have assembled about 8 or 9 of thse over the years and the current one feels just right to me. The cam gear...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Reading those links above to older threads, it's great to 'see' some of the folks who aren't with us anymore. Time seems to pass so quickly now and so I'm very glad to be spending so much time doing...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Terry and Ron both. Your ingenious methods, along with your 'can do' attitude is to me the heart and soul of this great hobby. There are many, many ways to enjoy our cars (and trucks :), but I am...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Wow, Thanks for the vote of confidence Terry. Now I'm grinning ear to ear. I'm thinking of working up some specific tooling for bringing down the tight squish spots as I chase after the still elusive...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Terry, The more I learn about the process I am now involved in, the more I understand the principles you put forth here. At the time I couldn't visualize the piston shape as relates to head shape....

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Interesting stuff Dale, thanks. There were some colorful folks and great minds in the racing scene in those days.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I'm starting to smile again. Thanks Dale, and Denny I never thought for a minute that anything you said was offensive. Heck, the only Barney I recall from the '60s had a last name of Rubble.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Thanks Denny, but is the work I'm doing on the heads above the pistons the relief you are mentioning? It should not take me too long to get everything to .040-.045 and finally put this behind me. If...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Maybe there will be some that don't approve of the use of wood as an indicator of compressed gasket thickness, but I carefully made these to .052 and testing indicates no compressing and I'm sure...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

As if I needed more drama, I will present something that hasn't been brought up yet. In post 246 I mentioned that all this measuring and clearancing to get to a 40+ state was performed with a used...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Les the machinest told me he took a very small amount off the decks to clean them up. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would angle mill the block without mentioning it to me. Been working on...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Since at this point I was really looking for it, I would agree with your observation. Good part of this is that those EAB heads could very well find a home on one of these other blocks and be in the...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Here's a couple of photos of a piston at absolute TDC. The piston's top is chamfered and I don't have the experience to call it. Protruding or not? In the one photo you can see the damaged corner on...

Re: My next flathead build?

That's a great idea with the ball glued on. I tried to do this measurement with some custom bent calipers, but got pretty inconclusive results. And I agree about the rare chance that you would end up...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Flatjack, not the slightest bit above the deck. I could get a close up of a piston at TDC tomorrow. Most of the heads I have came from the large stash of blocks and parts I bought from a neighbor. He...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Thanks for the kind words all! I've managed to stretch this into a 5 day weekend now, and counting. I did find some tight quench areas on the merc heads, but a couple spots at .030 and some at .035...

Re: Nice forty Ford

That is an extremely nice car. It would need to be treated with the same level of care we see with a fresh high dollar restoration IMHO. Wow.
