Try putting some Syl-Glide silicone grease on the inside of the rubbers. It will not harm the rubber and things should slide together much easier.

Your 51 has 15" wheels and your local tire store should have plenty of used 15" tires in their inventory. Also check your local Craigslist. Lots of wheels and tires on that site plus look at Facebook...

Don't buy anything that you cannot look at yourself. You also cannot always trust an inspector that you hire to do the job for you. Some may know old Fords and some may not.

Can you get the outside handle off? If so you may be able to move the mechanism by inserting a wide blade screwdriver into the square hole in the latch and turn it. You are going to have to pull off...

The end cap is what is holding up the assembly from coming loose. The end cap is die cast. At one time someone reproduced the end cap. Search around and if you can find another end cap I would then...

I suspect the chrome end cap has a lot of corrosion between the cap and the cast iron housing. Have you tried PB Blaster?

Move the steering wheel back and forth as you are trying to move the mechanism. Sometimes they get jammed up and moving the steering wheel can release it.

Drive shaft may or may not work as length needed may be different. Make sure you have 3/4" to 1" free play when you measure. The stock U bolts and spring plates should work along with your stock...

If you just need to touch up small rock chips etc. I did the following. I had a pin striper mix me up a small can of "One Shot" enamel to match the paint on my '40 Ford. Works great for small chips....
