Re: Garage lift

I have this lift:

https://www.kwik-lift.com

It requires a floor-jack to lift the rear. I park my car on it when I don't need to get under the car. I just moved... no longer need my...

Re: Shoebox Central's Steering Upgrade Kit?

Not sure how useful this will be, given the elapsed time.... about 8 years ago I ordered and installed the Jamco front end upgrade (ball joints, disk brakes) and Fatman steering and sway bar, for my...

Re: Overdrive electrics

UPDATE:

Drove the car with the solenoid out of circuit, and no blown fuses. Also checked all circuits (again). Found no obvious shorts.

I made one wiring change, switching the wire to...

Re: Overdrive electrics

The kickdown switch, relay, and 12 volt solenoid are all new, as is the wiring, which I continuity-checked yesterday. Found out the hard way the 12 volt solenoid is defective. The shaft on the...

Re: Overdrive electrics

By "coil slot" I was referring to the slot in the Painless fuse panel that holds the 30 amp fuse. .... that's the label on that slot.

I drove the car using the 6V solenoid for a few months...

My '50 Merc is 12 volt - ground, with Painless wiring end to end. This week I removed the defective 12 volt overdrive solenoid and re-installed the original 6 volt to fill the void until I can get a...

Re: Overdrive Issues (again)

I'm using a GM "one wire" alternator and a MSD distributor with a Blaster Coil. But will check anyway. Thanks

Re: Overdrive Issues (again)

I'm using the wiring diagram from VanPelt, which matches the diagram in my 1950-'51 Shop manual. I have a #10 wire from the Ign terminal on the relay (fuse) to the bat. side of the coil. Another...

Re: Overdrive Issues (again)

RotorWrench, thanks for taking time to respond. I rewired the entire OD and in most cases over-sized the wire. For instance, coil to fuse on the relay is #10. The mystery to me is why does it work...

Re: Overdrive Issues (again)

Pistonbroke: i’m beginning to wonder if it’s internal. I had a good mechanic rebuild the tranny and overdrive, but he had never done this type before. He used my shop manual for guidance. From...

Re: Overdrive Issues (again)

Not dumb at all. Yes, I did check fluid level. It’s good. Also had some drain out when I swapped the solenoid. It was clean, no metal.

Re: 1950 Merc Transmission question

Mac VP - The transmission and OD is original, and worked as it should before I had a local guy go through the transmission and OD unit. It has not worked correctly since re-installing after a 8 year...

Re: 1950 Merc Transmission question

Mac VP, thanks, from your clear drawing, it appears that lever (7292) is missing or damaged in my tranny. I'm getting along OK by simply taking it out of overdrive when I want to back up.... but...

1950 Merc Transmission question

Stock '50 Merc transmission with OD. Reverse will not engage if the OD control is "in". I have to disengage OD to back the car up.

In the shop manual transmission drawing, it appears there...

Re: Overdrive Governor

Pistonbroke.... THAT WAS IT! I was out of options... saw you post, and reduced my idle speed. Only about 150 RPM made all the difference. That simple adjustment and my OD shifts right about 29...

The governor did...

Re: Overdrive Governor

Unfortunately my '50 has the 4:27:1 rear end. As long as the overdrive is working it's fine... I can cruise 65 or 70 all day. Without overdrive, at 45 mph it turns around 2500 rpm. Not sure what...
