Re: Magneto and bets
The problem is you can't run a late distributor/magneto off the timing cover and still run the early 37-48 water pumps and crank pulley. When they moved the distributor to the side in 49 - 53 they...

Re: What gears in a stock '48 F1 with 9" rearend?
I'd go somewhere between 3.54 and 3.78. If you already have the 9", why not use it? The brakes are better, parts are available for a zillion suppliers, etc.. Yeah, you probably have to fab the...

Re: Brake Drum Paint
That is exactly what I do! I also use a high-temp filler to fill-in the dang areas on the drum with the recessed lettering (new repop drums) - can't stand looking at those letters . . . but hey, I'm...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
You'll also need a small snap-gauge or inside machinist divider/calipers to get into the valley and measure the installed spring heights. Usually, you'll find that the installed heights will be...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
You should be able to order a box of shims from Goodson. I usually buy a box of .060 and another of .015. I don't have the part numbers handy (anybody have them?). You can just measure a guide a...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
It is always best to test the particular springs that you have in your hand. I've seen them vary all over the place.
I have a hydraulic pressure gauge (from Jegs) that I put in my mill to...

Re: Clutch Release Shaft Bushing tool
You'll probably find that you'll need to ream or hone the IDs of those once they're installed. You can use a basic brake cylinder hone to get the job done.
I made a pilot on my lathe - that picks...

Re: W&H DuCoil V12 conversion
If you're making the points plate, the real issue is trying to get the points in the right location - as even being just a bit off will screw up the timing on 4 cylinders. Back in the day, the...

Re: Break-in gone wrong!
If you had absolutely no oil coming out of the 1/4" NPT port at the back of the block, then the issue has to be with the pump and/or the pump drive gears. I would surely check out all the bearings...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
It also has to do with spring pressure. If you're running a stock cam, you only need about 45 -50 lbs (max) of spring pressure . . . so that tends to be a bit more forgiving when using older...

Re: W&H DuCoil V12 conversion
Those are definitely magneto points - the same ones used in the Harman-Collins dual coils. They are not super hard to find (if you know the part numbers), though they are not exactly cheap either.

Re: Clutch?
I recently had RAM clutches make me a couple billet (lightened) flywheels and clutch packages for two different flatheads. The stuff wasn't cheap - but I wasn't looking for cheap . . . I was looking...

Re: 1933 Ford Truck Invoice
Interesting that the up charge for dual rear wheels and tires was roughly 25% of the base truck price.
Keep in mind, the base truck probably included single rear wheels and tires.
Goes to...

Re: Break-in gone wrong!
That is a real possibility! That happened to me on my very first stroker flathead (when I was 15).
Luckily, I saw the oil pressure drop and shut it down. Pulled the pan and there was one of...

Re: Testers ?
Depends on what you're testing. I prefer a digital MM for most voltage and continuity-based tests - is easy to use, easy to read, small footprint, etc.. I come from a world of big-black analog...

Re: Compression questions
You'll probably find that a re-core will be pushing a $1000 - my 32 recore cost me over $800 and that was almost 10 years ago. While a radiator is probably mandatory, you still may be having issues...

Re: How important is the oil pan baffle
Something to note - it kind of depends on how early the pan is and what the pump pickup is like. On the early engines, there was no big round assembly with a screen on the end of the pickup - it was...
