Re: "Rules" for crossbar-style rear bumper

Here's the service bulletin from Mar. 1928 (p. 230) saying how to make the swap. But I still haven't seen it on a '28 or '29 car. Maybe the shape of the 28/29 front bumper looks too weird when you...

Re: "Rules" for crossbar-style rear bumper

Here are two coupes and two roadsters I found on Google Image search that are unmistakably '30 and have the full-width rear bumper. Note that all of them also have luggage racks, and at least three...

"Rules" for crossbar-style rear bumper

I sometimes see cars with a crossbar-style rear bumper, i.e., one that goes all the way across like the front bumper. They naturally appear only on cars with side-mount spares. But they also appear...

Re: Shocks

Could be – I was going by Stipe's website, but maybe they're not updating it. Of course Bert's doesn't always update their site either.

Re: Shocks

Pricing on the Stipe shocks is sort of academic if no one can buy them.

Re: Spark Plug Gap

My understanding is that the .040 capability is just that - a capability. You could do it if you needed to, but I haven't seen anyone actually need to do it on these engines.

Re: Spark plug gap for high(er) compression head

I just reset the plugs on my 7:1 head to .27-28.

Re: Engine Rebuilder

Just following up on this to note that Kevin Prus's shop contents are being auctioned off (https://baerauctions.hibid.com/auction/306189/prus-online-auction/).

Re: a 400 on BAT went for 22k

The 400-B is now almost at $100K (https://www.ebay.com/itm/203580436288) with less than a day to go, but the reserve isn't met. I think it's a mistake to set the reserve that high without disclosing...

Re: Clear Distributor Cap

Nu-Rex supplies a cutaway cap with their timing kit and recommends using a timing light strobe to observe the rotor action:

I have one but I haven't had time to set it up yet to see how useful...

Re: Is Bars Leak still a good temp fix

I was dissuaded from using it after a couple guys told stories about it gumming up the works. They definitely still make it; you can find the tabs in auto supply stores.

Re: Surface Rust in Coolant Passages.

Address it after the system is sealed, using a de-rusting product like Thermocure or Rust911. Users of this forum have reported success with both; just follow the directions.

Re: Are These Head Studs Long Enough?

Rich Fallucca at AER says that, but it's not universal advice. The reason for this recommendation is that, as the OP here found out, some heads/gaskets are taller than stock, so you need to back the...

Re: Are These Head Studs Long Enough?

I'd be careful buying cylinder head studs from an industrial supplier. The thread fit is likely to be too loose for this application. When I was researching my block-thread-testing video, I had a...

Re: State of things: 21" radials

I have no idea. I did later find radial tubes in the 550R21 size for the Excelsiors, but, just checking now, Coker's website lists no radial tubes in the 440/450R21 size.

Re: State of things: 21" radials

Update: I finally got my wheels powder-coated and the tires mounted. I put the wheels on the car tonight to test for leaks. When I inflated them, one tube immediately started leaking around the stem,...

I'm planning to install a vacuum gauge once I get the car sorted. I think a vacuum gauge is one of those diagnostic tools that you learn to read over time, based on your specific knowledge of your...

Re: American Classic Vs Excelsior radials

Someone reported elsewhere that the 550s sometimes require modification of the side-mount spare carrier in order to get them to slide properly into the well. They work fine as tires though.

Re: Are These Head Studs Long Enough?

Depends how bad it is. The risk is that the washer will sit cock-eyed because of the galling, which would lead to less of the torque on the nut being transferred to clamp load. You could grind it...

I'd be surprised if you got opinions from anyone who had actually used both brands. Everyone I can recall saying they installed radials, either it was their first set or they were using the same...

Re: Are These Head Studs Long Enough?

What a pain. Looks like they're sold out at other sites too. One thing you could try is to contact ARP directly and find out which stud kits include that size.

If you end up one stud short I'll...
