Re: Model A no spark

If those wires burned up that badly, the wires from the terminal box to the instrument panel most likely are also toast. If they look the least bit blackened or feel crispy, replace them. All the...

Great! Please do provide the part number if it fits. We can all benefit from your successful repair and report.

Re: 7 tooth retainer clip

You might try matching the broken ring at a hardware store to see if they have a snap ring close to that size. As long as there is some kind of retainer on the bottom of the steering shaft in that...

Re: Narrow bed or wide bed

Check with Sammy Guthrie at Arizona Model A in Gilbert. He has just about everything you need. Also try Bert's Model A Center in Colorado. Steve always has a lot of parts like that.

Re: Tire Pressures

Do you have the inner tubes with metal stems? If so, did you install them yourself? Did you use rubber glue to seal the stems? Or did you buy the inner tubes with the metal stems already installed? I...

Re: 1928-29 a400

That looks surprisingly good! Great job. I wish Ford had brought out the 400-A in 1928-29 looking like this. I actually think the lines look better than my real 1931 Convertible Sedan! The visor...

Re: Deep knocking sound

I have found with the shim packs available in the last few years that I usually have to lightly heat the pack with a low frame torch in order to separate them. Normally, a razor blade worked fine in...

Re: Deep knocking sound

I file a nick at the front of each main bearing cap to ensure that I re-install it correctly oriented. The rounded raised ridge is a perfect place to do this. Painting a dot or slash can result in it...

Re: Spare tire bracket 28-29

Good news for the poster if only the plate is wrong on his side mount setup. He can order just the plate needed from Snyder's @ $10.95 + S & H:

Re: Spare tire bracket 28-29

By the way, if you have the incorrect '30-31 side arm, mount and plate instead of what you need for your '28-29 Model A, I have a complete new set-up that has never been installed. See the want ads...

Re: Spare tire bracket 28-29

Maybe these comparison photos will help you determine which side mount arm and plate you have. The almost-assembled car shown is a 1929 Murray Town Sedan with dual side mounts. Note the plate...

Re: Spare tire bracket 28-29

That plate is angled forward on 1930-31 Model A's, but is straight up and down on 1928-29's with side wells. The point of the plate is at the bottom. Make sure you have the correct side arm, as they...

Re: Deep knocking sound

Good questions and something to consider, but Dkrahn states that the noise is a DEEP loud knock. That tells me he thinks it's coming from down deeper inside the engine, not up top in the cylinder...

Re: Deep knocking sound

If it truly is a deep knock and not a hollow rapping sound (a rod bearing), it's probably the center main bearing, or at least one of the main bearings. Generally, nothing goes wrong with #1 main...

Re: Steering

Synchro909 -
If you have not yet experienced a two-tooth steering box, you will love its adaptability as time and usage move on. You can actually make periodic adjustments to compensate for wear,...

Re: Wind Wing installation

Buy a cheap ping pong paddle with the pimply rubber faces. Try for a dark color, or even gray. Peel off one side of the rubber pad and trace the shape of the windwing brackets on the smooth side of...

Re: Steering

I am not a fan of the seven-tooth steering design, but will admit when they are set up properly (and with extra non-factory machine work as Synchro909 states), they can steer nicely and be a pleasure...

Re: Steering

This adjustment will not gain you much in correcting loose steering in a seven-tooth steering box, but you might try it anyway. Jack the front end of the car up, turn the steering wheel to the middle...

Re: Rebuilding generator

Try a shorter fan belt, which would change the relationship between the pulley and the shroud as the generator is pulled closer to the engine. The gap between them would be increased. The fan belt in...

Re: Electric Fuel Shut off

Unfortunately, unless you still have an original on/off valve, you can't simply "lap" the stem on repo valves because of their construction. They either hold fuel back or leak and as far as i know,...

Re: Electric Fuel Shut off

If your car has the pop-out ignition switch, you can't install the electronic shut off valve to be operated by the switch. You'd have to possibly run wires to a toggle switch.

Re: New fuel shutoff valve, ball valve filter

Pinch the tube with a pair of pliers to make the tube slightly egg-shaped. Then push the tube into the on/off valve. That interference fit will hold it in place inside the on/off valve. I've done...

1928-29 Phaeton side curtains and rods, black Stay-Fast

Complete set of side curtains in black STAY-FAST material, plus rods and carrying bag. Used, but still very nice. Slight yellowing in a couple windows, but still very clear. I cleaned one window with...
