Re: Idle Mixture Screw

I sprayed WD-40 around the obvious joints (carburetor mount, intake manifold vacuum port, intake manifold/block joints) but I didn’t see any change in idle speed.

Re: Idle Mixture Screw

Yes, I had the timing advanced. I thought I read that somewhere. I’ll need to read the owners manual again.

Re: Idle Mixture Screw

Oh, okay. Like I said, I’m a newbie on fuel systems. Thanks.

With the vacuum gauge attached to the manifold, the engine did want to stall when closed to near zero. I didn’t see signs of stalling...

Re: Idle Mixture Screw

How many miles will it likely take before I should check the plugs for carbon? If it’s rich, will it show up immediately on the plugs? Or will it take a while?

Re: Idle Mixture Screw

This is the first time I’ve ever used a vacuum gauge as well as the first time I’ve done anything with a Model A carburetor. (The fuel system is not my forte.). Does 45-50 with the idle mixture screw...

Re: Idle Mixture Screw

The wiper vacuum line itself does not seem to have a leak. I don’t know how to test the wiper body itself. This is 3 turns open measured at the wiper vacuum line at the wiper body.

Idle Mixture Screw

There may be a slight vacuum leak in the wiper. When I warmed up the engine and idled at 500, I took this video. Is this helpful? This video is with the idle mixture screw 1-1/2 turns open. With the...

Yeah, I missed that. It’s a Zenith. Thanks for pointing that out.

Re: Idle Mixture Screw

I’ve had the car for almost 5 years, and the GAV never has done much; the car always ran fine without having to adjust the GAV. (That had me scratching my head because I’ve read quite a number of...

Re: Idle Mixture Screw

Yes, I did start at 1-1/2. I need to check on a possible vacuum leak.

Re: Idle Mixture Screw

Hmmm… I have a vacuum wiper that never has worked all that great. A vacuum leak could be a possibility.

Re: Idle Mixture Screw

Thanks. I’ll be really frank. I don’t see much difference between fully closed and three turns open. This carburetor was rebuilt by a well known rebuilder on this forum; so, I’m assuming it was...

Idle Mixture Screw

I swapped out my carburetor for a rebuilt one, and I’m trying to adjust it. I’m a newbie at this. I’ve been working through the Les Andrews book, but I’m still unsure which direction is more lean and...

How many miles should spark plugs last?

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. If I applied the 10,000 mile rule to Champion 3X plugs, that would get pricy. I think I’ll stay with the Champion 518s (W18s).

How many miles should spark plugs last?

The reason I was reluctant to change plugs was that I was looking for the culprit that caused the issue in the first place. I was thinking replacing the plugs could mask some other problem that I had...

Re: How many miles should spark plugs last?

Do these plug cleaners essentially “sand blast” the plugs? How great of a risk is it to get abrasive residue in the engine?

Re: How many miles should spark plugs last?

Good idea. #4 was the culprit. Now, I’ll change the rest of them.

For what it’s worth, I’m moving from Motorcraft TT10 plugs to Champion 518 (W18) plugs. The electrodes on the new plugs are much...

Re: How many miles should spark plugs last?

Wow. Interesting information.

I do recall spark plug cleaners from my teenage days. Even K-Mart sold some sort of cheapie, dumbed down device “for the masses.” I think it looked something like...

Re: How many miles should spark plugs last?

Newer plugs are often made of tougher metal too, correct?

Re: How many miles should spark plugs last?

Yeah, I agree. Newer cars can run extended periods of time on plugs without maintenance. I have 108K on my 2012 Honda Odyssey plugs and 118K on my 2008 Mazda Miata plugs. I have not cleaned or gapped...

How many miles should spark plugs last?

Thanks for the response. However, this is not a matter of me being cheap. I already bought a set of plugs, but I haven’t had time to install them yet. (I’m thinking the new plugs will likely “fix”...

Re: How many miles should spark plugs last?

Was the spark plug tester somewhat similar to this?
