Re: Rear main leak part 4
Thanks Brent. I’ve never seen insert bearings, so I wasn’t sure. Im guessing replacing the seal would help with the leak.

Rear main leak part 4
After dropping the oil pan I removed the rear main bearing cap and this is what I found. There’s a shredded seal behind the cap that can’t be helping. Also, in the second picture the bearing cap...

Oil pump removal
I’ve been going over some things on a 31 roadster I just got. I dropped the oil pan to check for sludge - not too bad, a little on the bottom. It’s been a few years since I removed the pan on an A,...

Re: Difficulty with oil pan removal
Thanks guys. It’s kind of hard to get good pictures, but maybe this will show what’s going on. I finally did get it off with a lot of maneuvering and a some loss of skin. Getting it back on might be...

Difficulty with oil pan removal
I recently acquired a 1931 A that has a big oil leak from the drain behind the rear main. In dropping the oil pan, I was unable to lower it out as the forward lip is a little forward of the front...

Identifying a high compression head
I’ve seen high compression heads described as looking original. Is there an easy visual way to tell the various compression ratios and original heads apart on an installed engine?

Re: Stranded by the road
I found the short and everything's fixed. To my surprise, it was by base of the bulb on the left front headlight. I don't usually drive with the lights on during the day and still don't think I had...

Re: Stranded by the road
My problem is somewhere in the headlights. Everything works OK until I go to dim or bright on the switch. Brakes, cowl lights and horn work fine. Now to figure the rest out. It's got me a little...

Re: Stranded by the road
Thanks a ton guys. I wasn't too far from home, so the tow strap came in handy and I can work on it in my garage. I disconnected the wire to the light bundle from the alternator and the ticking...

Re: Stranded by the road
Burned right through a 20 amp fuse, so I guess I'm about to learn a little more about the electrical system.

Stranded by the road
I was driving down the road, when my A began to sputter and quit. The ammeter showed a large fluctuating discharge, even with the key removed, and a clicking sound came from the engine area. When I...

Re: starter drive spring and bolts
Thanks Tom, I had to run out after removing the starter and didn't get a very good look at it. I see now what you've explained. As I reassembled it, the threads on the bolt that came loose weren't...

starter drive spring and bolts
I went to start the car and got the starter motor to turn but not engage. Upon removing the starter found that one of the starter drive bolts and washers was missing. I fished it out with a magnet...

Thanks all, I hope to get at it next week and will post the results.
This was my first experience with a rope seal, and I just pressed it in place and trimmed to a fit similar to the one I removed....

Re: Oil pan tube
The engine does leak oil like a sieve when running. At speed it coats the everything under the cowl, but at idle or shut down, I don't notice any more leaking so it sounds like the tube is the...

Re: Oil pan tube
It looks very much like that except that it appears to be copper and was brazed on instead of threaded. It doesn't seem to leak at all when parked, but has been when driving. I've been thinking the...

Oil pan tube
