A couple of different things to try. Also the bottom bolts in the door can be loosened to allow bottom of door to be pulled out to raise it. Observe door gaps during process to determine which way...

No, the stock distributor requires ported carb. vacuum to operate correctly, not manifold vacuum.

Take a peek into #7 plug hole, you may or may not be able to see something like this.
A burnt exhaust valve spotted after chasing the source of some of the same symptoms.

Just a suggestion, before I did anything else, I would remove the phony dual intake (as previously suggested).
Mount a single carb and try it that way.

You might screw up the ignition or electrical system BUT the starter doesn't care, it's not polarity sensitive and will turn in the same direction.

Adjustable lifters are not stock but are used when rebuilding to eliminate the

need to grind valve ends to achieve clearance as the factory did.

Perhaps to help clarify timing cover compatibility with distributor type.

Distributor type A is generally meant to fit cover type A....

Used to own a '47 Merc. convertible back in the late 50's'
The originals were cast pot metal and I do recall that aftermarket (not Ford)
replacements were available that were formed sheet metal....

The physical size of the GM distributor is bigger than the flathead distributor.
Perhaps if you could invent a 'component shrink-er' you could stuff the guts of the GM distributor inside the...
