Re: Optima Battery Maintenance

I have used the 6V Optima batteries with great success. I've also used their 12V red tops.
My 1966 mustang has a Optima Red Top dated 02/06, and it still works great. This is with 11.5 to 1...

Re: electic pump

This is exactly like my drawing, and condensed to fit in a small space. It uses a lot of hose clamps, but looks like it works just fine. You can spend more time/money to make it look cleaner, but...

Re: electic pump

If you study the diagram, the check valve will keep the pump from simply circulating back to the tank... yet when the pump is NOT turned on, the mechanical pump on the engine will still be able to...

Re: electic pump

Mechanical fuel pumps often have a hard time drawing fuel THROUGH an electric pump that is turned off.

This is a way you can use a check valve (one way valve) to plumb in an electric pump. When...

Re: Advice for a New Father

Find ways to include your kids in your hobby, and even more importantly... find ways to make it FUN.

Kids like ACTION. Some guys are into guns. They may be into bench rest target shooting. ...

Re: Thinking about selling the '34 Phaeton

Very happy with the home the car ended up in! David truly appreciates the car, and I cannot think of a better caretaker!

I hadn't seen some of those pictures before! The car hauler pic is...

Re: Best oil for V8

ALL modern motor oil is detergent oil. They ALL have detergents as well as anti-wear additives. The only oils that are non-detergent say so right on the container, and also contain ZERO anti-wear...

Re: Best oil for V8

Video of an oil expert commenting on non-detergent oil, and the analysis from sending it to a lab. Just over 2 minutes long.

Re: Best oil for V8

I saw a test done on 'Non Detergent' oil. They sent it off for a test and found that it had basically NO ADDITIVE PACKAGE. It was just straight base oil without any anti-wear additives. It's the...

Re: 1940 gear oils

One more thing to add... For those wanting a high performance GL4 oil, Brad Penn/Penngrade sells a nice formulation... for a reasonable price. Below are links to places that it.

Re: 1940 gear oils

Gear oils labeled both GL4/GL5 should also be safe.

Re: Full Effort Flathead (Keith Dorton Build)

I think this is partly where 'reality' and 'legend' meet. It's hard to flow enough air through the stock block flathead architecture to LEGITIMATELY make strong power numbers, especially at 6k rpm...

Re: Bolt remover socket

This. Impacts knock the nut/bolt loose... and is FAR more effective than simply pulling on a breaker bar.

If the head is rounded off, sometimes a similar metric socket, especially a 6-point...

Re: Changed The Weight Of My Oil

15w40 diesel oil is pretty good stuff. It has plenty of additives for long engine life, and should be thick enough to allow your engine to run quietly... without being too thick for warm up. I...

Re: 4 post lifts

2 post is best for actually working on cars. Most of what you work on is brakes/suspension, etc... which requires wheels to be removed. With a 4 post, the wheels are on the ground. Even if you do...

Re: Bolt remover socket

What size is it? Sometimes you can pound on a metric socket that is just a tad smaller. Have you tried a 6 point socket? Impact wrenches are FAR more successful at busting loose stubborn...

Re: DOT3 or DOT5 Brake fluid

DOT 5 is a silicone based fluid, and is not compatible with DOT 3... so the system needs to be COMPLETELY flushed in order to make the switch.

DOT 4 is basically Synthetic DOT 3, and is...

Re: Engine Break In

Running it in without a load for too long will keep the rings from properly seating. They need the heat/cylinder pressure to properly break in, and not just glaze over. Improper break in on the...

Engine Break In

This came up in another thread, but thought it deserved a wider audience, as it applies to much more than the scope of that thread. This is a comprehensive post about break in. Ring seal is BIG. Lake...
