Re: Lightened Flywheel

If you want a complete engineering analysis on what is happening, do a search on this forum by MikeK about torsional vibration. It was about 2 to 5 years ago.
He even had an animated file of a crank...

Re: Lightened Flywheel

"When running down the road at a constant speed the engine is almost vibration free. It has far less vibration than other Model A's I have owned."

In that case it is not a balance problem. It is...

Re: Flathead V-8 Starter Rebuilding

I have always replaced them with gear drive type starters. They last forever even when cranking a 14 to 1 engine.

Re: 8BA lifters noisy

NO, that is NOT the proper way. Neither valve is EXACTLY on the center of the cam heel at that point.
There are several methods of determining the center point. The easiest requires no special...

Re: 8BA lifters noisy

By your first statement, I have to assume you have the equipment to adjust a stock valve train.
First off, forget adjustable lifters. That is a Mickey Mouse fix that has a high potential of failing....

Dempsey raced roadsters, midgets, sprint and stock cars. He finished 11th in the 1963 Indianapolis 500 race. His...

Re: Guess who's back in the kitchen?

I always enjoyed Herm's posts but I still wouldn't have an engine align bored with a Tobin Arp machine.

Re: What is a "reasonable" speed in a Model A for one to get "reasonable" engine life

I use my A for a parts chaser and sometimes drive it to town Friday nights for "bench racing and hanging out". It is capable of going easily over 100 mph and I do that quite often on a certain road....

Re: Snyder 5.5 head

In racing it is called "cheating" but some like to think of it as "creative thinking".

Re: L-100 cam in a 221

For clearance, I run .002 on street engines and .003 on race engines.

I use 1.795 as a minimum as long as it is round.

Re: flathead cam

We turn them 7200. We use titanium valves and lightweight lifters.
We know for sure they will turn over 8K with no valve float.
One of our engines had the dog clutch coupling break coming off of...

Re: L-100 cam in a 221

Just for the book, I won't put a race grind on an after market cast core.
The heat treat is really bad. (inconsistent)

Re: t 5 tranmission

I went back and precision measured (with a tape Measure). The stick pivot is 3.4375
back from my original.
The stick is 15 inches long above the pivot.
The center of the shift knob travels 4...

Re: flathead cam

Originaly the steel billet (mostly SAE8620 in the old days) was copper plated between the lobes and anywhere they did NOT want it to be hardened. The hardening process is a surface type and is...

Re: flathead cam

I have never heard of that but it probably could be done with some creative welding and machining.

All of the ones I heard of had Norden cranks. Norden made all kinds of neat race car stuff.

Re: flathead cam

If it is what it is stamped, it is a #4 Meyer Drake 270 Offy grind for short tracks.
The "180" could be it was for an engine with a single plane crank.
It was originally designed by Ed Winfield in...
