Push the dipstick fully in. Try a quart less for a while before you rebuild the engine.

As long as you can cover the piston with solvent it will get to the rings, no need to find a specific position. After it soaks for a while and while the plugs are out crank the engine some, you want...

I have freed stuck rings, and valves for that matter, with Marvel Mystery Oil, and trans fluid mix. Let it soak for a few days.

You say the engine was rebuilt 1000 miles ago, but How many years ago? gummed up rings happen with time not miles.

If the oil is old and dirty, change it before you run the car. Even in neutral the car will have some resistance to rolling due to some normal drag on the bands.

I had a model A adjustable lifter that liked to wander. I used some red LocTite when I re-adjusted it and it hasn't moved since.

Sal is correct, but you need to have all the moving parts completely free to move correctly, no binding or friction.

I changed to a manual choke when I used this carb on another make of car. The carb has worked well for me. Is your problem on the initial setting cold? Or not opening fully when hot?

I use ethanol if I plan to use it up and then straight non E when it will sit. I use marine stabil in both. I use MMO also.

MAACO can do very nice work if you are willing to do a lot of the prep work, or pay them to do it. I had a small side business working up cars for a good paint job and had Maaco, and other, "quick"...

Brent is right, but I think I would have freed up the nut after the stud was out and then had more ability in the future to remove the nut should the stud ever get locked in the block.
