Bob I would buy new correct length rods and make sure you get 15 degree forward slant with the levers. If you can’t obtain the 15 degrees you could install the little brake pills or replace the brake...

It’s safer not to remove the spring attached to the rear end. Remove the rear end then remove rear spring. Wrap the spring with a chain before removing from car

You should always lower the coolant level first. Seepage goes both ways I would get the coolant level down and change your oil immediately. Don’t put coolant back in until that stud is tight again
