Actually, 1956 was a transition year, the late 1956 Thunderbirds had the cooler lines, and the early ones did not. The 56 F100 had a complicated cooler that did not use the bottom of the radiator...

You are correct, the factory gas cap on the 1955 was recessed to clear the tangs that hang down from the cross flags and Ford crest emblem. The 1956 did not have those emblems since the gas door...

I would look into having the rear of the fan spacer shaved a 1/2" or so. This will bring the fan back 1/2" but make sure the rear of the fan is not going to interfere with something. I am not a fan...
