I would try to remove the starter, its only two bolts and the negative wire.
Then you know if the starter is the problem.
Gear box stuck i two gears gives similar problems.

The ones for the 1200/1300 have a pin in one en, making it a bit hard to mount.
The one for 1302 have holes in both ends, one end have small hole though.

I would remove the manifold, and check for valve trouble.
If its not i guess you have to remove the head.
With this said my son had a SBC that started to knock (ping) So we retarded the ignition....

Just for the record, i have used 6V starter on 12V systemm for 30 years.
Two Bendix springs broken during all years, no other problem.
Yes i have a spring with don't take long time to swap out.
