That piece is called a guide plate & from what I could find is supposed to be installed until 39. I'm have some difficulties get my lever to turn back & forth & am thinking about leaving it out ....

Koates, You are more than welcome to come & help. You should see the underneath of the dash. I only started this 34 project when I turned 80. That is pretty quick for a bucket case doncha think.
