Most of you would know this but there are quite a few things that can cause steering to feel loose other than the box ,I have read some of easy steers complaints of looseness on the Model A...

If you place a straight edge across the PP clamping face that goes on the flywheel 6mm would be the depth to the working face that clamps the disk ,any more than that might be to much .around 11,1/2...

There's a whole back ground to this story ,I was told over two years ago by a Kiwi living in the states that (his words ) they intend to copy your stuff , Obviously the box for Glen did not leave ...

I haven't used the urethane but I have used cane as it bends and takes tacks well .

If I needed to replace the rubber fill material I would consider windscreen urethane in the tube, its dense and would take a tack,you could staple the cloth to it ,

The last 1946 we did we rolled the rear back on the drums until the rubber brake line was tight this created enough gap to lift out the box ,make sure the drive shaft rear collar and the front...

Just my observation ,it appears to be starving for fuel in both carbs you have tried . ,blow out the intermediate jets with compressed air at least 100 psi ,also inlet manifold could be leaking ....

Yeah you need a press ,there many and varied ways of doing it, you can use Collars or clamps but you run the risk of squashing
the pipe ,Usually the worms have the Key way on the opposite side...
