Re: '46 mercury steering wheel trim

I'm thinking of epoxying the spokes and clamping them on between wood blocks....or maybe just get another wheel without the trim - LOL!

'46 mercury steering wheel trim

Any idea how to remove and replace the 2 stainless trim pieces on the spokes of a '46 Mercury steering wheel so it can be restored?

Re: A jailbar woodie on Bring a Trailer

One easy improvement would be to lose the whitewalls - it's a 4x4 truck!

Re: Ma Bell's working woodie wagon?

Shades of Ansel...here's my '47 Merc with ornithologist/photographer Don Bleitz preparing to shoot. I must add that as a surfer of more than 50 years, I never presented this car as a 'surf...

Re: 12v battery on 6v system?

There used to be a "6-12" battery - two 6V units switched by a solenoid so that you had 12V to start and went back to 6V to run. It solved the weak cranking problem when my old '42 wagon's flathead...

Re: Car collection - Need some help

Pretty easy to skip through the ads. Worth it when I spotted a '48 Marmon-Herrington/Merc woodie at 6:26; looks like it might be the one from Sotheby's auction last year.

Re: Brake question

Thanks Kurt - it's probably the booster; the engine is a good-running small-block with fewer than 30K mi. on it.

Re: ‘39 Merc All Terrain Vehicle???

Thanks, but that one wasn't mine - just comparing Ford and Merc differences. My old '42 still lives back east somewhere.

Re: ‘39 Merc All Terrain Vehicle???

Cool stuff, huh? I've had my Merc over 28 years - it's been really fun collecting and learning about M-H history.

Re: ‘39 Merc All Terrain Vehicle???

I can't comment on the driving characteristics in COMPENSATING DRIVE; it was apparently removed from my t-case to prevent wear (it did bind, skip and complain in POSITIVE DRIVE the one time I tested...

Re: ‘39 Merc All Terrain Vehicle???

THANKS! My first woodie was a '42. A M-H clone was made a few years ago, but unfortunately was lost in one of those terrible fires in Calif. last year.

Re: ‘39 Merc All Terrain Vehicle???

[QUOTE

So, the question is this: what period (40’s era) upgrades can be done to the Merc to improve it’s hill climbing ability? The drivetrain is rock solid on the ‘39 and on highways and surface...

Re: ‘39 Merc All Terrain Vehicle???

The light-duty M-H transfer cases were single-range, either engaged full-time - with no shift lever - (the CV joints free-wheeled on curves), or could be shifted from that funtion (called...

Re: ‘39 Merc All Terrain Vehicle???

I have 1938 literature that says Marmon-Herrington would charge all of $10 to fit 4.44:1 gears to any chassis delivered with anything else. My '47 runs 4.11's and a 1.5 ton truck 4-speed.

Re: School me on grease guns

Here's a semi-relevant tip: For years I couldn't get the grease tip onto the zerks on the front driveshaft of my M-H Merc; I tried needle tips but wasn't satisfied with the results. The answer: I...

Re: Any brake geniuses out there?

I'm getting closer...there seems to be a fine line between push rod adjustment and brake shoe adjustment that needs to be balanced. I should add that I've been driving this car for over 25 years;...

Re: 42 flat head 4spd ,fluids, how to drive

Nope...no synchros. Double clutch if you are trying to (barely, anyway) keep up with traffic; if not, you can patiently wait for revs to drop and shift without it. As for the noise: some of it comes...
