I think I got it figured out. I replaced the coil and also backed the ignition wire out if the distributor about half a turn (I think it was shorting out on the bottom plate). I drove it around for...

I am using an external resistor mounted on the firewall. The original 6v wiring was a mess in the car and it had a 6v alternator set up. Looking back I would have probably just kept everything 6v but...
