If you are going to refurbish the brakes, IMO.. I would replace each component as a unit, shoes and drums, and to inspect, clean and re-adjust/replace internal parts as required. Getting stopped...

I did re-adjust the striker plate on my '29 this summer, the wear allowed the door to become slightly ajar. Usually a right turn or maybe a hard bump would do it. Probably replace mine this winter.....

The rod that you reference is straight. E Brake handle is in front of the shifter..
