You could build up a little brass on the end of the shaft to take up for wear on the head to eliminate the end play or add a little set collar. My old pump had the set collar on it so I re-used it...

Mix acetone and automatic transmission fluid about 1/2 and 1/2 and put in a pump oil can. Mix as needed as acetone tends to evaporate. Much better penetrant than the letter/number brand and cheaper....

Its a gear pump, almost bulletproof. If it is turning it is working. All it does is deliver oil to the valve gallery. Everything is gravity fed from there.
