Thanks again. I found a tire distributor not too far away that specializes in split rim tire applications. Not cheap, but they will do the job on my site.

Since this is to be a permenant change, you could also cut the original off close enough to the tank so as to miss the column altogether.

What are the engine numbers? That may have some bearing on whether someone would want to go the distance to save them.
