Tapered, with no hole. By the time I get a screwdriver under the tapered end, the pressure required to do that causes the retainer to skate around the groove. I didn’t see a way to hold the retainer...

The last time I repacked the rear wheel bearings, I tore up the grease seals getting them out. So, I replaced them. I wouldn’t be surprised if I tear them up again.
