Re: Strange starter noise

I figured it out.

It turns out the locking tab on the bolt at the end of the shaft was hitting the inside of the bell housing, just a little. I inspected everything again, and noticed that...

Re: Strange starter noise

I may take you up on it . . .

I'm a little glad that this is a puzzling one. I thought I was crazy and you guys were going to tell me about something bone-head simple that I'd forgotten :)

Re: Strange starter noise

I haven't let it run more than about 10 seconds, because I have neither the fuel nor cooling systems hooked up. But I'm pretty sure the answer is no; the longest run I got out of it was long enough...

Re: Strange starter noise

A buddy of mine (who knows way more than I do about these cars) came by and we played around with it for bit.

Tried shimming the starter, no effect.

We pulled it all out and checked...

I moved it to youtube: https://youtu.be/IMZ0mKpP0ks (https://youtu.be/IMZ0mKpP0ks)

The bendix and shaft are clean and dry. It slides smoothly on the spiral cuts in the shaft. The...

Re: Strange starter noise

Here's a quick video. You can hear the clacking noise. This is with the plugs out, it's somewhat more pronounced when it comes up to a compression stroke.

Re: Strange starter noise

It sure looks true when I spin it on a bench . . .

The noise isn't consistent with that anyway. It's kind of a rapid clatter/vibration. It seems about the right frequency to be every gear...

Re: Strange starter noise

The bolts are the correct 3/8-NC-1 dimension. No marks on any of them. The lower outside one (which is closest to the ring gear) has about 3/16 clearance.

A buddy who knows more about these...

Re: Strange starter noise

Wow, you learn something new every day. I didn't realize there was one short bolt. I'll check that when I get out to the shop. Thanks!

Re: Strange starter noise

The ring gear is seated well on the flywheel. There was maybe .010 gap against the shoulder, consistent all the way around.

Marks on the pinion gear indicate that it's engaging the ring about...

Strange starter noise

Hi folks. I'm piece by piece reassembling my '28 Tudor.

I bolted up enough to try cranking the engine today. Most everything worked, but I'm getting quite a bit of noise from the starter. ...

Re: PPG paint codes?

Thanks everyone for all the info!

I tried these codes out on a local PPG dealer. Most of them make sense, but 15976 comes up as a 1985 VW Golf color called "Deep Cosmic Blue". I dug...

Re: PPG paint codes?

Thanks. I'd prefer enamel. Yes, I know the original was lacquer, but I find it too fiddly.

1950 Ford F1: replacement keys?

I have a '50 F1. Hot-rodded, so little left of the original mechanicals, but some stock things (I think) are the ignition switch and door locks.

Does anybody know of a source for...

Re: '28 Tudor: Wood blocks

Good point, thanks!

The frame certainly looks straight, but I'm sure my uncalibrated eyeballs aren't completely accurate. I'll take some measurements to make sure before I go any further.

I'm glad there's so much stuff available for the As. And I'm not above buying stuff when the tradeoff seems right. But my usual philosophy (with cars, tractors, airplanes, and maybe...

Re: '28 Tudor: Wood blocks

Epilogue: I dug around on this and a couple of other sites, and talked to a couple car buddies. I've assembled a set of drawings with dimensions for a '28 Tudor. If anybody would like copies,...

Re: '28 Tudor: Wood blocks

Interesting.

The pads on the blocks I removed are pretty cruddy looking. Per above, I thought they were leather. Some of them may be, they certainly shred apart like old dried/rotted leather. ...

Re: '28 Tudor: Wood blocks

Cool, I'll take a look.

Re the blocks themselves, I certainly could order a pre-made kit. But what's the fun in having all these tools if I don't use them to make parts when I can? :) If...

'28 Tudor: Wood blocks

Is there a spec for the wood blocks which go between the body and frame? Dimensions, pics, etc?

I have a '28 Tudor which I'm slowly reassembling. I'm test fitting the body. For some reason I...

Re: Massachusetts YOM plates?

Really?? Why would there be no plate for '50? Did the registry screw up and not issue that year for some reason?

Good point about checking whether the number is already in use. There seems...
