Re: Black spark plug ooze

I had this same problem, and it turned-out to be the piston rings were not sealing properly in my rebuilt engine. I used synthetic oil before the rings seated. After changing the motor oil to SAE...

Re: About spark plug gap

The spark plug gap is set on the basis of:
> The amount of hi-voltage available to jump the gaps in the distributor & spark plugs;

> Volumetric efficiency of the engine's intake system;

Re: Leather main bearing

I once used a 16 Penny nail to link the ends of a broken fan belt together, and it got me home that way. The wildest thing I ever saw was a Model A on the interstate with a pair of Visegrips sticking...

Re: Bone Stock or Modified?

I wonder why some folks keep their Model A's stock. In a stock configuration, a Model A is not safe to drive in modern traffic. Certainly nobody of sound mind would drive a Model A with an original...

Re: Rear water pump grease fitting

The most significant reason a leakless pump gets its name is because the shaft cannot move horizontally, and it has a modern seal under the packing nut. However, even a leakless pump will start to...

Re: Lightened Flywheel

The flywheel plays an important role in the dynamic response to the engine's vibrations. When the flywheel & clutch are lightened, the consequences are:
1. Lightening the flywheel & clutch reduces...

Re: Most Difficult Restoration Tasks

Cutting-in the back corners of the top on a Sport Coupe is a scary task. If the cuts are not positioned so they are hidden by the valence, the top needs to be replaced. Scary!!!

Most Difficult Restoration Tasks

Looking back at all of the restoration projects I have had hands-on, the most difficult tasks that I recall are:
1. Bending the exterior roof molding on my Victoria;
2. Installing a top on a Sport...

Re: Sick engine

The very first thing you should have done is a compression test of the motor.

Could it be that somebody actually tried to lift / hoist the engine by the timing pin? Or could it that somebody bent the pin to advance the timing? Or could it be that somebody banged the engine...

Re: 60-A and 60-B Body Tags (Briggs)

Thanks for posting this Steve. To me, it solves the mystery of why some 190A Victoria Coupe owners think that Briggs built 190As, which they did not. Of the 591 Victoria survivors on record with...

Re: Loose Pitman Arm

My solution to this problem is:
>Widen the gap in the arm that the lock bolt squeezes;
>Shim the gaps that may exist between the arm and sector using steel sheet, not aluminum and not brass.

Re: 1929 u joint

There are 2 types of U-Joint. The riveted joint (left photo) is not rebuildable, and should be discarded. The other U-joint (middle photo) is rebuildable.

400A Convertible Sedan

What body building company built the 400A Convertible Sedan? Was it Briggs or Murray? My guess is it was Murray because of the 400A's commonality to the 190A Victoria Coupe.

Re: Heated Seats In The Model "A"

In my opinion, the heated seat pads are a home run! Having tested the seat pads on a couple of cruises, the heat is comforting to my back and derriere. I initially thought that the pads would slip &...
