Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I'd have to agree. The job of a spring by definition is to flex. From everything I know, flexing and paint are incompatible.

Re: What gears in a stock '48 F1 with 9" rearend?

I have found this video to be very instructive : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idk3BVDVHq4&t=6s

Re: What gears in a stock '48 F1 with 9" rearend?

It kind of makes a difference by where you are; mountainous or hilly country vs. the flat plains will make a difference. So will tire size. Also, are you going to use it as a truck a substantial part...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I couldn't find one of them KR Wilson valve compressors, so I made my own from a piece of pipe and some scrap metal. It was easy and worked well.

Re: Public Service Announcement: Avoiding Ethanol

I have not had a problem with ethanol fuel either, EXCEPT years 30 years ago, I had an ice fishing auger with a very small gasoline engine. Every spring I would prepare it for storage and every fall...

Re: W&H DuCoil V12 conversion

It would appear there is a big difference between the old and new style DuCoil distributors. Would they use the same point plate?

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

This brings to mind the issues of new lifters on a used cam. This is generally considered to be OK as long as the cam is in good shape. In the final analysis, you can try anything, but using mixed...

Re: 1951 Ford F3 stroker questions

If your pistons are good, go with 'em. If you need new ones, I'd go to .125" over (3 5/16" bore).

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

As to camshafts, try to find a later Mercury cam; they have substantially more lift and a bit more duration than the 8BA units. Check this site out :...

Re: 255 Merucry Dyno Pull

Interesting. According to what I can find on the internet (Isky's site), this cam has a lift of .325" and a duration of 240, while a stock Merc cam has a lift of .338" and the same duration (from the...

Re: Front seals

I'd listen to "Kube". Years ago, I bought a one piece seal to use in an engine I was doing. After looking it over and doing a little research, I installed the original seal.

Re: 255 Merucry Dyno Pull

It would be interesting to have a little more detailed information, such as the cam grind, overbore (if any), and if any work that was done on the heads.. The early 255's were rated at 110 HP, while...

Re: Ford Liquamatic auto trans in '41 Merc/Lincoln- has anyone seen one?

A lot of Chrysler Corporation products had this same setup in the early fifties. It caused me a few problems when I built my first T Bucket using a "baby hemi" in the early sixties.

I...

Re: 8ba oil pump question

The gear/cover clearance is given in the reprint of the manual I have for '49-'51 Fords. I don't have access to it at the moment, but I believe it is .008"

Re: Vacuum Leak

I vote for brass. I'd keep an eye on that rubber plug; it could deteriorate rather quickly from the heat and fumes in the engine compartment.

Re: New Eddie Myers’s heads question

The engine was supposedly "professionally built" with an Iskendarian MAX-1 camshaft. I had assumed that everything was done properly. I picked up the completed short block and completed the assembly....

Re: New Eddie Myers’s heads question

The reason I asked is that was what I did with a set of new Offenhauser heads (just bolt 'em on without checking) on a 276" Merc thirty years ago. I was never as satisfied with the power that engine...

Re: New Eddie Myers’s heads question

I'm curious about what you would do after "checking for piston and valve clearance" and found, as the O/P found, you had .141" clearance over the piston. I wouldn't think to "bolt them on and go"...

Re: Final Drive ratio, will a 3.25/1 be too steep ??

I find that anything over 2700 RPM and the engine seems to be "unhappy". 2300-2500 is optimum with a stock (Mercury 1CM) cam.

Re: Street Cam

Depending on what it's going into, I'd reconsider the 3.08 gears. Maybe on a very light roadster, but not for anything heavier. Makes a difference in which cam you go with as well. The whole thing...

Re: 1951 Ford, runs fine then runs bad.

"The Brillman Company" is a good source for Packard 440 plug wires. They also have the neat-o Rajah spark plug terminals that make life easier.

Re: V8 on engine stand

I have no actual experience, but I'd bet that the Model A adapter won't work. Even it it did bolt on, the engine would be at a weird angle.

BTW, If you have a later ('49-'54) engine without the...
