Re: Alcohol Race Fuel

I watched the Engine Masters episode as well. However, the bottom line for their tests is that there's no real gain in using a higher octane fuel than what an engine requires. Nevertheless, timing,...

Re: My 56 Thunderbird transmission Leaks?

Although I still don't recommend it, the "Technical Section" of the CTCI Thunderbird Restoration and Details Manual contains detailed instructions for removing the transmission without removing the...

Re: My 56 Thunderbird transmission Leaks?

I don't recommend removing/installing the transmission in pieces. Yes, it can be done, but those who choose to do it are in the minority. I know someone who removed his in pieces. However, he ended...

Re: Bird fan shroud modification

I have a U.S. Radiator 4-row copper & brass, still in the box. An aluminum shroud/w electric puller fan is available for same; has anyone used it? I can see where an electric fan would be an...

Re: My 56 Thunderbird transmission Leaks?

Fordomatics aren't the only transmissions that leak, but that's one of the reasons for my replacing mine with a C4. C4s can leak, too. Hopefully, my builder will do all he can to minimize the...

Re: 55 power steering conversion

I've not heard of any 55-57 Tbirds owners' being happy with the rack-and-pinion conversion, which actually increased the already wide turning radius.

Re: 55 power steering conversion

Unless you can find used parts that are in good condition, expect to pay $1500-$2500 for parts. Borgeson has a conversion kit that eliminates the hydraulic boom, quicker ratio, and will probably give...

Re: speedo gear-in tranny

DON'T remove the tail shaft to replace the speedometer driven gear! As Paul said, just follow the speedometer cable to the transmission. 55-56 Tbird transmissions use a 90-degree drive that is...

Re: speedo gear-in tranny

The 55-56 transmissions use the same type gear, gear drive, and cable. The 57 transmission uses the new style gear and cable. If you go to ant Tbird supplier's website, you will see the different...

Re: Engine horsepower

gofastmath.com will put you in the ballpark, if you have all of the correct numbers to plug in. If you post your engine's specs, there might be someone with a similar build, who should be able to...

Re: Y-block B intake manifold question

dmsfrr, I have plenty of space, just too much stuff! Good thing I have a large bedroom. My 55 Tbird's bare seat and new foam (still in the box) are in the back of my trunk (it has a shell/w rug). At...

Re: Y-block B intake manifold question

dmsfrr, you are absolutely right. I just popped the cap off my 57 Tbird distributor, and the vacuum advance arm is straight. I knew there was a change in 59, I just got it backwards.

Let's hope I...

Re: Y-block B intake manifold question

I'm pretty sure that 59-up distributors do not use the ball-bearing plate, and the vacuum-advance arm is straight, not curved as found on earlier distributors.

Re: Y-block B intake manifold question

I fully support buying American-made products, but where do you think the replacement parts for a Ford distributor come from? The OP will have a difficult time just finding a condenser that works.

Re: Y-block B intake manifold question

Yblock57, that distributor looks pretty rough. Don't you think that nice truck deserves something better?

Ted Eaton recently tested a CRT Performance electronic distributor for Y-blocks. Although...

Re: Y-block B intake manifold question

Yblock57, your machine shop should be able to tell you whether or not the intake manifold needs to be surface. Gasket choice/sealant could make a difference.

Have you selected a carburetor?...

Re: 6 to 12

No need for "reducers." Make sure gauges and sending units are of the same voltage. When I converted my 55 to 12v, I didn't touch sending units or gauges, and they work as well as they did before...

Re: front 57 wagon sway bar install

First of all, make sure you're not trying to install it upside down. Initially, wheels should be off the ground; I used stands and floor jack. Turn wheels to lock and maneuver each end into place,...

C I buy "a round tuit" at Harbor Freight? If so, does it come with instructions?

Re: Checking radiator for overheating problem with 1956 Thunderbird

Ted Eaton (eatonbalancing.com/y-blocksforever.com) has drilled and tapped the thermostat housing for a temperature sending unit, the location of which provides a more accurate reading.

Re: 55 crown power window motor

If your 55 is still 6v, convert to 12v; that will really speed up those 6v window motors.

I converted my 55 Tbird to 12v but retained the 6v window motors. The windows are dangerously fast now.
