.. and whilst we're on it why DID Ford originally put on a thin washer as well as a lock washer... does the washer serve any purpose? ( if it's to stop the screw bottoming out it surely it would have...

U joint felt seals.. how do you fit them?

How do you get these felt seals to fit neatly in the groove of the "clam shells" . The new felts looks far too big and loose in their uncompressed state.

Thanks everyone. I have one of each type of U joints in the garage .... Possibly surprisingly the riveted one ( which I assume is older) has no discernable play at all .... whilst the replacement...

Whilst the transmission is out I'm checking the U joint. It has done at least 20K miles no problems - greased regularly . All looks good but I estimate it has about 2 thou play- ie just detectable....

Any tips on how to line up the splines of the UJ and Drive Shaft when re-installing engine and transmission? I see a special tool available from dealers.. Does it help? Is there a simple backyard...

yep often a symptom of a weak mixture/fuel starvation, ... so easy things first ... check the flow of fuel from tank to carb and the various stariners filters etc.. then move on to other stuff.

In about 100000 miles of A driving over a couple of decades I have had 1 fibre gear mash up and 1 fibre gear loosen on the central metal section. So from then on it has metal gears only for me. ...

It's not the float valve or the float valve gaskets that's the leaking issue in post #1... it says ".... In this case the gas level stops below the correct level and stays there. However it still...

yes, puzzling. Are you sure it's not seepage from the inlet union ? If the fuel level in the pic is not rising then that float valve is certainly working OK . Sometimes the leak is hard to locate....

If you're sure it leaks from the air intake with the fuel level as in your pic I suspect the main or cap gasket. But whatever it's one of the list below! ..

add to all the useful info above .. When I measured them a few years back the fitted 4.50x21 had a rolling perimeter of 2450mms and the fitted 4.75-5.00 x19 had a perimeter of 2300mms... So you may...

Yes Brent in Oh C post #12... the Ford manauls indicate measuring and gives toe for, a couple of inches from the perimeter, and Jim/GApost #16-the same thought came to me over night ...I agree.. so...

Aaaaargh !! I wondered about that meself! It's all a very rough estimate and everyone estimates seem pretty damn close! Perhaps someone can measure it all in situ if nothing better to do........

axle to tie rod is 6 inches. Axle to centre of tirewall is 13 inches. axle to tread perimter of tire 15 inches
Soooo.... have I got this right..????
One full turn of tie rod extends it 0.084...

Hotrodart you must have a much more sophisticated measuring stick than my shower rod! ...It is the math that intrigues me .... when I see that the toe in is say 1/4 inch I ask myself ( and Barners)...

To save my brain ... has any one done the math (or even a guesstimate) as to how many full turns of the the tie rod equates to a 1/16 inch change of toe in?
