Re: Longest trip you took in a Model A

The data plate says its dry weight is 680 kg. That is 1496 pounds in the old speak but by the time we load it up, I estimate there is not much change out of a ton and I'm talking a proper ton, 2240...

Re: The new Burtz Mosel A engine

That's exactly how I saw it develop too. Like most countries in the west these days, those skills have disappeared. Where will we stand when the inevitable confrontation with China happens if we (the...

Re: Proper way to fold down top

If a top is left down for any extended length of time, it shrinks. Have you left it down like that before and if so, was it difficult to put back up? I have no trouble driving in he rain in my...

Re: Mystery leak

All sorts of possibilities. A good look with a light and a mirror should reveal all. Pleas let us know what you find.

Re: The new Burtz Mosel A engine

The way the inserts stand proud of the block is what we call "crush". Maybe you guys use the same term but Terry is right, they should be about 0.003 or 4" high so that when the cap is torqued down,...

Re: Mystery leak

Rust through in the water jacket. In a non pressurised cooling system like the Model A, it can be patched but it's engine out to do it.

Re: The new Burtz Mosel A engine

I understand Terry is aware of the issue with the screws standing proud in the thrust rings and is including the correct ones with each motor. Some grit in the water jacket shouldn't be the end of...

Re: Head gasket question

Take the old gasket to a vendor so you can do a comparison. I bet a BEST graphite gasket (my choice) will do the job.

Re: The new Burtz Mosel A engine

I am hearing report that there is quite a bit of loose sand in the water jacket and swarf in the oil passages making a thorough cleaning essential. It's not that I would assemble an engine without a...

Re: Longest trip you took in a Model A

I was inspired to begin these outback trips by a friend who did his first in 1988. He drives a '28 Chev so we don't count his efforts but I think they are still worth a mention. He has now done in...

Re: Battery Move

I have a sheet metal box I made specially to go there. It holds a few tools, distributor and water pump. All close and handy and out of the way.

Re: 6 to 12 Volt & Neg ground

Change light globes, flasher can and if you have electric wipers, that too. I highly recommend you convert the starter to 12v. No matter what the drive, it won't last long. I've seen 6v starters...

Re: Longest trip you took in a Model A

Coincidently, my longest single trip was also in a 1929 Phaeton when we did a lap of most of the continent. 12,000 miles with a camper trailer behind. That was 2014.
In a few weeks we set off on...

Re: Max Speed of a Model A in Stock Form

When people ask "What speed will it do?" I answer "I don't know, I've never tried it." That puzzles most people but it's true. I don't see the point of this thread.

Re: 80 Engines SOLD Middletown, NJ

Dave, Thanks for the offer but I have made other arrangements now. I bought the bits I need from a friend in the US but I still may be in touch. I have a couple of axles on the way from there but...

Re: 80 Engines SOLD Middletown, NJ

That nearly makes me cry. I was recently looking for an engine to rebuild but gave up. There were none to be had and I've not heard of one for a long time now. It's a very different scene over there,...

Re: Coolant Seepage at front of head

That was my suggestion to the vendor. Water off a duck's back, I'm afraid.

Re: Why do you own a Model A?

About 25 years ago, I owned 3 late 20's cars. A Chrysler, a FIAT and a Delage. A fire in the workshop cost me the first two and I swore off cars after that. My wife nearly died in that fire.
After a...

Re: Flywheel Housing Check

That's one way of doing it. Another might be to put some forward pressure on the crank at the front pulley before taking a measurement.

Re: Fan Blade orientation

I think the problem goes deeper than that. By turning the blades over, they will still move air in the wrong direction. For that fan to draw air through the radiator, the motor would have to turn in...
