I re-furbish '39 handles when they are in good shape. Almost impossible to remove the stainless skin and replace without splitting and tearing. The back assembly can be removed and replaced to repair...

Remember that the broken key can only be removed/extracted if the lock is in the locked position. (Locked column position)

The above item is probably the culprit; the small round pin is probably sheared. You are lucky the lock pawl was in the un-locked position when the failure occurred. The lock cylinder must be removed...

The middle one is '38-'39 Passenger car; The one on the right is '36 pickup (will work on '37 pickup); also backwardly compatible with '35-early '36, but with reversed switch-on position)
