Maybe I'm missing something, but because the crankshaft makes two revolutions for one four-stroke-cycle, the dimple will indeed indicate TDC on both compression and exhaust stroke. 180 degrees off...

I use Shell Rotella 30W diesel oil; the previousowner mentioned that the zinc in the oil helps with the babbit bearings.
