Re: KRW Combination Machine

Ray
The Babbitt talent is already on the decline unfortunately
Inserting the motor is already done with good success and now the Burtz motor is available

But you do have a point as new people...

Re: Head stud to block

One last point to be concerned with here
Be careful to not drill too deeply
The stud boss is fairly thin in the bottom and you do not want to penetrate into the water jacket

Re: The absolute 'MINIMUM' cylinder wall thickness....

It has been proven that 4.000 bores or larger do not necessarily cause overheating as the primary source
I just do not subscribe to this over overbore theory

However I have stopped doing any...

Re: The absolute 'MINIMUM' cylinder wall thickness....

Something else to consider besides a barely adequate cooling system design is that higher efficiency motors do run cooler
Partly because of the flow characteristics in the cylinder to more...

Re: The absolute 'MINIMUM' cylinder wall thickness....

Brent

There are too many variables to your question, too thin a wall will cause other issues.

If memory serves, 1/16" of calcium/rust build up equates to multiple inches of cast iron in regards...

Re: Stipe Machine/Specialty Motor Cams

The blanks are not hard to make
The drive gear is a little tricky but not impossible
The biggest challenge is getting the basic profiles for the lobes done, heat treated and final finish.

Re: valve recession

Typically having a valve low will not cause too much trouble other than limiting port flow
It should be noted that removing material from the seat will never raise the valve up
Replacing seats is...

Re: Oil Pump Shaft

hmmm,
This has been my concern with modified V8 pumps for the model A.
The housing was never made for this and he castings too thin.
I made a few billet alum adaptors for V8 pumps that will never...

Re: Oil Pump Shaft

Considering the pump shafts are .498 diameter finding a 5/8 shaft will be difficult to assemble

Re: V8 Clutch in Model A: Something is not right

From the first picture it looks like the pressure plate is compressed too far, disk is too thick. It is positioning the arms too deep into the PP assembly, no room to actuate and release the clutch....

Re: Electric Model A's

More than likely his wife could drive a stick and he was jealous

Yes learning to drive one should be a requirement for license
It will educate the drivers or prevent those who shouldn’t

Re: what is this? mag drive?

It is an attempt at a side drive magneto
The gear is properly sized for a mag with 2:1 gear reduction or a governor

Most aircraft mags are 2:1 or crank speed.

Re: Model B engine advantages?

Considering this thread is 10 years old it still holds true with the exception of Terry Burtz accomplishing seemingly the impossible feat

Re: Donovan 4 Cylinder

Chris

The V4 classes are Vintage strictly meaning original blocks of pre 1935 manufacture
You can run the Donovan in the displacement classes but the architecture is a disadvantage

Re: Donovan 4 Cylinder

This was a couple years ago, "D" block and a Arnold Birner head a friend was making.

I did a build on another "D" block made for the Birner head, without intake ports or valve chambers.

Re: high conpression head ??

Yes
There is a balance point between C/R and airflow
This has been demonstrated on flow bench testing
All moderate c/r heads will probably perform well within reason
Spark plug placement is...

Re: Safety cage?

Hmm,
Adding a cage to any street car is not recommended, a properly designed and built cage will become dangerous unless you wear a helmet.

I have looked at a couple sedan type model A's that had...

Re: Lion Speed Head?

I have heard rumors of Lion heads detonating, that is how the one I have was acquired.

Using the proper sparkplug and limiting the advance does wonders.

I doubt seriously the sharp edges could...
