Was it shipped from a location that would have freezing temperatures. If so it could be a freeze crack and that could be more troublesome.

If it is a gallon and a half low it could be a head gasket and it leaked down to the level of the head gasket. Sounds to be about the right amount of coolant that would have been lost.

The above answers are spot on. Also use a low octane fuel. High octane is a waste of money and will give poorer performance in an A.

Take a few passes with some fine sandpaper through the points to make sure they are clean.
Check your ground from the battery to the frame assure a good ground.
