I think the pan came loose when you first drove the car. The noise would have disappeared when the big end scoop wore through the pan.

Never use a rubber ball. You are just fooling yourself. Cut the old ball off and weld on a new one, and use the steel cups and springs, Joy all around.

Rear axle nut torque setting.

What is the required rear axle nut torque setting? There must be a torque setting these days. Usually I just go good and tight, but would like to adjust properly and have both rear nuts the same.
