Re: Long Reach Plug

That plug is fine for most situations - depending on your heads, spark plug location and cam/valves. It is running a "Projected Tip" which puts the electrode down in the chamber. That is fine as...

Re: Do I fit in

Welcome John!

This group build flatheads of all sorts - from bone stock to highly modified street engines, to 100% race engines to ones with overhead conversions . . . we pretty much cover...

Re: Long Reach Plug

The H10's are 7/16 reach and I stopped running Champion plugs quite a few decades ago. Since these newer heads have 3/4" reach plugs, here are a couple to choose from - depending on your ignition...

Re: 39 synchronizer question

Yeah, I've had an issue before with this exact thing happening . . . usually because of very worn synchros and associated parts. I switched over from this style of synchro hub mechanism to the...

Re: Evans Aluminum Heads

Well, I have a brand new set of Eddy heads - will have to CC them. First, I need a hunk of plex! LOL

Re: 39 synchronizer question

Looks to me like somebody forgot to put the rest of the parts in . . . the little springs and balls. It would have synchronized fine (as these parts do not influence that), and I guess the shifter...

Re: 1940 V8 Cam / valve timing

Here is a reference to CompCams and how they describe the 'Intake Centerline' method of checking a cam's location (advance/retard). This is basically what I do - though the individual steps will...

Re: Evans Aluminum Heads

Jeep Guy: That does not surprise me at all. One can see by looking at the amount of material they now mill from above the valves that the chambers are a lot bigger than the older "as cast" chamber...

Re: chevy dizzy for flatheads

Hey Tom - explain to folks what you mean with the "long shaft" comment - many will have no clue as to what you can do with this and the components it allows you to use.

Re: 1940 V8 Cam / valve timing

Good perspective John!

One thing I know is that camshafts (and their specs) get a lot of folks quite confused and the only real way to become comfortable with them is to spend a bit of time with...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

If you use a larger diameter base than the original '94', you definitely need to "port" the intake and port match it to the base. Anything else causes a heck of an obstruction and bad air flow in...

Re: 1940 V8 Cam / valve timing

Okay - time to eat a bit of crow and extend the conversation and technical details a bit. A very knowledgeable friend of mine and I discussed the issue of "checking clearance".

This is...

Re: Replacing, refitting and reaming new throttle shaft bushings in Strombergs

Another thing worth considering (if restoring originals) is to blast and ceramic coat the bases and choke linkage parts. Regular paint tends to peel and bubble, then they rust and everything looks...

Re: 1940 V8 Cam / valve timing

I've degreed a lot of cams . . . on flatheads, overheads, overhead cams, etc.. I'm not sure who you were talking to at the cam manufacturer, but every set of cam specs I've ever worked with specify...

Re: Evans Aluminum Heads

They look nice - can't claim to compare/contrast their performance to others (have never ran them). Nor can I comment on the quality of machining, hole placement, etc..

In the end, run what yah...

Re: Evans Aluminum Heads

Note, from what I can tell the transfer/relief area of the chambers on these new Evan's heads is much deeper than Edelbrock's are. You can see that in the pics - seems pretty obvious to me.

The...

Re: chevy dizzy for flatheads

As the question is a bit open-ended, the answer needs to be a bit clearer.

1) 1932-1948 - Front Mounted: There is nothing wrong with the front-mounted flathead distributors (32 - 48) - as long as...

Re: Replacing, refitting and reaming new throttle shaft bushings in Strombergs

RE: Extended throttle shafts at .282" diameter. I would think that one could buy a .285 reamer and just ream out the original bushings and use these shafts (if that is what you have). Uncle Max,...

Re: Anyone have one they can measure?

If you look at an earlier oil-pan, you'll see a funny little triangular sheet metal component on the front passenger side corner of the pan. It has about a 1/4" slot that will draw combustion-gasses...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

That appears to be what came out around 1956 or 1957 - it might be the bigger Holley 2110 (maybe). I would run that carb over a stock 94 in a heartbeat - it flows about 50 more cfm and with the 276...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Exactly! I worked with Ed Isky to make two roller-cams for flatheads - back when I was in my early 20's. Then (due to not having roller lifters and no time to make them), I drug those cams around...

Re: Anyone have one they can measure?

Yes - it fits in the little recess on the intake manifold, the oil-pump stand gasket goes on top of it.

The baffle extends down and picks up a receiver area in the valley of the block - that...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Be careful when NOT using the lock plate, that the 4 cam gear bolts don't go THROUGH the back of the camshaft flange and then gall up the thrust surface on your block!

I always install the gear...
