My A had a little less than 50,000 miles on it when it got it's engine rebuild. All indications were that it was it's first. I had to go buy a 4-point socket. I think I still have it in my toolbox.

I have seen that happen, but when I have seen it the points did not open far enough to give the coil time to charge and colapse.

And tap on the carb a bit. Sometimes that needle-n-seat /float tends to hang a bit when the carb is upside down, and such. However, it seems like you are on the right track.

I had a Brumfield super head on one of my engines. I can't recall what ratio that was. That thing had hardly no spark advance with a touring cam. Ran fine on 87. BTW, higher compression heads...
