Re: New versus old valve springs
The kit must have had the wrong springs in it since it also came with the valves, retainers, and locks. I would check if there is anyone else in the area with decent used springs to save you the cost...

Re: Exhaust cross-over pipe mystery insert
The older I get the more I realize the original Ford engineers knew a thing or two about making flathead V8 powered cars. An original flathead era Ford in top shape is a wonderful driving machine.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
That plate should do the truck nicely.
I did a bit of wandering around the internet looking for clutch disk information and the most helpful bit I found was a post on the HAMB:...

Re: 1950 Mercury add factory OD
If you are willing to forgo some of the automatic features of the factory control system you can use much fewer parts to install the overdrive. The minimum you need for easy install is the...

Re: Exhaust cross-over pipe mystery insert
If you are running good thermostats I suspect you will see no difference in temperatures. JWL was performing dyno tests of an 8BA and found one of these stuck closed in the crossover pipe after...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Are you going to add bolt in braces that go from your new crossmember to the factory crossmember? I think that would be more than enough triangulation for the master cylinder and clutch assembly....

Re: Gear lube
If the 47 three speed is in the pickup pictured as your avatar, they were open drive from the factory. I don't have a good answer for the grease, but wouldn't worry about it if everything is working...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
I didn't take measurements, but it will be more than 1/16 inch. The 1 1/16 is the venturi size, the base is larger diameter. The two things that worry me about boring out to the larger base diameter...

Re: Hand Opersted Tachometer ??
Hand operated tachometer was used in equipment repair and testing. You held a friction end against a shaft to see how fast it was running.

Re: What weight oil should I use - Brand?
You have the correct fitting, it is the one the oil pressure sending unit is threaded into.
Your engine appears to be assembled out of several sources. Your car left the factory with a tangerine...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
I'm doing a poor job of describing this, so I took a few pictures. For size comparison reference, at left is an intake with the regular diameter flathead intake openings, next to it is a 1 5/16...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
Did you look up inside the carburetor base with the throttle plates open to see if there is a mis-match in bore size, or if the center section is 1.335" where it mates to the base section? I'm not a...

Re: What weight oil should I use - Brand?
Asking what oil to run is a dangerous thing on an internet forum. You will get lots of opinions. You will also be warned about zinc. Please be aware that zinc (ZDDP) was added to oil in the late 50s,...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
I'm not a fan of the pictured carburetor configuration. If you open the throttle blades you will probably find the bore in the base is larger than the bore in the center section, that there is a big...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
You may want to put the nice looking carburetor on another flathead V8 in your fleet and test run it first. You don't want the first running of your new engine to be an exercise in trouble shooting a...

You could also try the usual NOS vendors and see if one is still...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts
I typically bolt the gear onto the cam before installing the cam, then line up the dots on the gears when dropping in the crank. Can you see the offset in the bolt holes of the cam? Maybe make a...
