The highest price gas around here is right around the Chevron Refinery. One reason is probably due to the close proximity to LAX.

IF you decide to go with America Classic Radials, ensure you inspect the inside of the tire for inspection stickers. They WILL cut your tubes.

20 inHg is good, If your Idle Mixture Screw is 3 turns out, you may have a vacuum leak somewhere. A lot of good suggestions where to look in previous posts.

You need to read the inch of merury scale (inner scale on your gauge). You have ~20 inHg.
A vacuum guge is a handy diagnostic tool.

You don't mention what carburetor you have. A Marvel is the opposite of a Zenith. The idle mixture screw adjusts the amont of gas at idle on a Marvel so turning it CCW will enrichen the mixture.

I like homemade, I have many myself. I was referring to the one the vendors sell. I don't know what you consider "BIG $$". Last Snap-On S-8663-B I bought on e-bay for $40 .

No argument, but a friend running a Weber just had his engine fill with gasoline due to a leaky shut-off valve. So each type have their own issues.
