Re: 2 tooth steering adjustment

I jack up the vehicle and disconnect the drag link from the pitman arm. This allows an easy way to check the steering gear set in the straight ahead centered position. There should be smooth movement...

Re: Rear Diff Plug HELP

I'm a gas welder myself. I braze cast iron like that so that the banjo casting doesn't crack. It would heat the plug in the bore well enough for it to come loose. Heating and welding cast iron can be...

Re: Victoria body drop

They likely had build sheets for special orders and then just the standard production cars.

Charles Sorenson has some mention in his book about the assembly line start ups for each major change in...

Re: Nice truck!

They draw a crowd where ever they go. The runabout pickup conversions are always a kick. Ford finally made them that way in 1925 and later.

Re: Polarity tester

The electronic ignition just uses a different trigger to affect the collapse of the magnetic field in the coil core. The capacitor was there to keep the breaker points from arcing and to prolong the...

Re: Victoria body drop

It would be interesting to know just how they prepared for body blocks and bolts to set the bodies on efficiently with relatively fast production.

Re: Polarity tester

I don't trust a lot of modern stuff to be correct. If you find an internal diagram to a can type ignition coil, look at the way the primary winding is connected. Each end of the primary coil is...

Re: source for mohair upholstery fabric

Mohair is difficult to source as it is without worry of a color shade match. After many years, the original color of the fabric fades anyway. Check with Classtique if you want Mohair. They sell by...

Re: Adjusting timing

The starter turns too fast so the only other way besides the hand crank would be to lift a rear tire off the ground and turn the whole drive system while in low. The hand crank is much easier plus a...

Re: 39 synchronizer question

There are variations in the blocker ring type synchronisers. The first type 91A-7124 assembly had two spring rings and little 91A-7116 metal plates that fit the hub and acted as detents to a degree...

Re: Starter issues

I use Dow Corning DC4 silicon grease. It's the standard in the aviation industry.

Re: Starter issues

Things like paint on the faying surfaces and crusty bolts can reduce the ground path for the circuit. Worn brushes and bearings can be a real drag on performance. The switch can also have problems....

Re: Whatisit?

If a person plays around with this stuff long enough, they can looks at those numbers and tell a lot about what it was meant to fit. With Ford's first digit being a decade code and the second being a...

Re: steering box

That was common with the Ford parts procedures. If something was superseded, only the available part was listed in later catalogs. It's nice to have the 1959 version since it was the latest revision...

Re: removing a gauge cluster

Some of he old Mercury cars are easier to remove the whole dash than to try and get under it. I don't know about the jail bar trucks. Most Ford dashes have the steering column support and the screws...

Re: Overvoltage

What meter were you getting the lower voltage readings on? Does your 41 have an Amp meter or a Battery meter in the dash. If it's an Amp meter then it may have a short some place. That would play...

Re: 1930 Sport Coupe Panel Above Deck Lid

The roadster panel appears to be longer from front to back like the 28 & 29 panel differences between coupe and roadster. That makes sense due to the shorter belt line and the way the deck lid fits...

Re: 1930 Sport Coupe Panel Above Deck Lid

I won't swear to it but some sources indicate that that panel is interchangeable with the roadster of that year. Brookville makes those but I don't know about accuracy. The front section of drip...

Re: Rear end squealing/whining

I think they still had the Timken Detroit B-150 axle for 1-ton applications. The A-150 was a 3/4-ton application.

If the pinion bearings are worn, the gear set will make noise if there is...

Re: Condenser

The vertex magneto caps look to be home made and somewhat similar to the subject cap in the OPs first post. They plug the end with what appears to be an epoxy compound. I still use the Echlin brand...

Re: Overheating 1946 V8

Re: model a engine

I wouldn't overhaul unless it's burning oil or losing compression. A good reason will be in order, otherwise run it for a while and see how it does.

Tube rivet sets are available in different shank diameters but they require care in the bucking process.

Re: Can't replace hub after replacing brake pads.

A lot of brake shoe linings are thicker than standard so that they will work with drums than have been turned to oversize. This can be a problem when a person puts new shoes on. Other things like the...

Re: 1930 Model A Coupe roof installation

The soot trick (blowing soot with a O/A torch) is about the only way to anneal aluminum with common tools. I haven't tried using a sharpie marker but then again I don't need to with an O/A torch rig.
