shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 Where can I get a long shifter for my 50 f1. Just installed a t5 and you would need arms as long as a gorilla to shift it with the one that came with it. THANKS MUCH
|
Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 I modified the original shifter. I cut off the ball and then heated and bent it to where I want it. Then just welded it to an aftermarket shifter that mounts to the top of T5. Put a little home made boot over the welded connection and Bob's Your Uncle.

Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 1 Attachment(s)
This'll probably start a storm with some of the "police" on here, but so be it. Almost sounds like you used a T5 with an S-10 tailshaft housing, like the one pictured on TOP in the pic below. It has the shifter mounted farther forward. The BOTTOM T5 in the pic is out of something like a Camaro, with the shifter mounted farther back. The tailshaft housings can be swapped-out. Lots more info available if that's what you're up against. DD

Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 I used one like the top, is there any shift kit you can swap with a long shifter.
|
Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 If you are capable of swapping that trans, you should be capable of fabricating a longer shifter. Most folks use the proper tailshaft housing to space the shifter where it needs to be...just ONE of the many positive attributes of the T5s. DD

Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 2 Attachment(s)
Suggestion...Find an old shifter handle like the one in the first picture. Determine the length you need after bending to desired shape. Cut bottom off and discard. Find a piece of 1/4" or 3/8" scrap that can be shaped and cut similar to the shape of the bottom of the shifter in the second pic. Drill to bolt onto your shifter stub. Weld to bottom of your new, lengthened shifter....VOILA! DD

Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 I found a Lockar shifter handle at a swapmeet. Then welded it to the T-5 shifer stub. It has a nice traditional look.

Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 I just welded an early Ford shifter to the stub. The early Ford rubber boot covers the welded part.
|
Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 Used a piece of 3/4" channel iron which fit perfectly on the T5 shifter stub. Drilled holes in it to bolt to the stub. Used an original 3 speed shifter arm, cut it to fit and welded it to the 3/4" channel. Uses the original F1 knob and a Jeep boot. Looks original and works great.

Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 1 Attachment(s)
I had to do it differently because I was going to make a short throw adapter and this would require extending the portion of the stick below the pivot. Rather than weld on both the bottom and the top of the stick, I made a whole new stick. This took about 15 minutes in the lathe..Very simple job. I had the stick heat treated so it wouldn't break when power shifting in hill climbs. With the short throw adapter, I have a 4 inch throw between 1 and 2 with a 14 inch stick.

Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 Lime Works at one time we're making conversion shift lever. Also Street Rodder had an article. March 2006 " T5 Swan Dive" on showing how to convert one. LOL, Gordon

Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 35 coupe...Since you asked about a kit, and since I ran across this "kit", click on the link below. Not my recommendation...just FYI! DD

Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 Pete,
lets see your short throw adapter. Did you make it or buy it? I believe the concept is the higher the hinge point the shorter the throws. Is that what you did? |
Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 Quote:
I made it. I raised the hinge point 2 inches. |
Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 But when you raise the hinge point doesn't the throw arm ( below the hinge point) become too short or are you lengthening it as well?
|
Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 You lengthen that also and I don't recommend welding if you are going to abuse it.

Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 Thanks everybody for your input i am almost done with my installation, just have to find a 28 spline yoke for the tranny
|
Re: shifter for t5 in a 50 f1 bugsiegel, I did that on mine but just went 3/4". The shifting just didn't feel right so I went back to the original. I don't know if it would have hurt anything but the shift was a little mushy.
